The Cambridgeshire Times June 1934.
A HIGHLY ESTEEMED MAN.
Death of Mr J.E.J. Smith of March.
An unassuming Public worker. Inhabitants of March heard with regret on Friday morning of the death at the age of 84 years , of Mr Joseph Elliott Johnson Smith , of West End March,
Chairman of the March Bench , a very highly esteemed Public servant and head of Messrs Joseph Smith & Co. the well known firm of merchants and millers. The news of Mr Smiths death did not come as a surprise , however, as it was generally known that he was critically ill. He had endured a long and trying illness of 6 years duration and for several years he had been wheeled about in a bath chair. Latterly he became much worse and he had been unconscious for a month previous to his death.
MANY PUBLIC OFFICES.
No public man in March has been more highly esteemed than Mr Smith, who in the course of his lengthy career rendered considerably service to the community both in the affairs of the County and of the town of March. Mr Smith did not perhaps come so prominently before the public eye as others engaged in public work but he nevertheless had a fine record of service. He was one of those who endeavoured in the most unostentatious ways to discharge thoroughly, whatever he undertook to do. Unassuming indeed, rather of a retiring disposition - he was at the same time a most carest and conscientious worker and those who laboured with him in public life placed a high value upon his services. Although not actually a native of the Isle of Ely, Mr Smith came of an Isle family, and his father being born at Tydd St Giles. Mr Smith was born in 1849 at The Park. Nottingham in which town his father carried on business as a corn merchant. At the age of 24 he came to March to assist his father in the business of .............piece missing.
The Funeral took place at St Johns Church March on Monday afternoon followed by the interment at the cemetery when many people attended to pay their last tribute to the one much esteemed. the service was conducted by the Rector Rev. S.S. Walton
The immediate mourners present were Miss H.H. Smith daughter. Mr Philip Smith. Mr Frank Smith. and Mr Harold Smith. sons

MARCH ALDERMAN'S WIDOW
Mrs. Joseph Smith's Death at Age of 85.
A KINDLY AND GENEROUS WOMAN.
The Death occurred on Tuesday at her Home, Oak Tree House, March, of Mrs. Hannah Edith Smith, widow of the late Alderman Jos. E. J. Smith, J.P., who served on the County Council for many years and was head of the well known milling firm of Messrs. Joseph Smith and Co., of March.
Mrs. Smith's passing came rather suddenly, for a week before her death, which occurred at the age of 85 years, she was in her normal state of health.
By her death, March has lost a valued resident. She was one of the first members to serve on the executive committee of the March District Nursing Association, and, although she retired from it some years ago, her interest never flagged. She was a staunch churchwoman, a regular attendant at St. John's Church, and a great supporter of mission work. One of her daughters, Mrs. Bryant, was trained as a Docton and became a Surgeon, serving for some years, until her marriage, in a hospital in India.
