Ezekiel was born on Nov 9, 1823 in London England, died on Jan 19, 1891 in 11 St Lukes Road Bath Somerset England at age 67, and was buried on Jan 24, 1891 in Locksbrook Cemetery.

General Notes: In an attachment to an email, dated June 28, 2003, Harold Chesterman states:-

Ezekiel Bickham Chesterman (9 Nov 1823 - 19 Jan 1891)
Born at 35 Bowling Green Lane, Clerkenwell, London. (Source: copy of birth certificate). Apprenticed to "Henry Major of No. 23 (illegible) of Clerkenwell" in 1838 to learn "his Art of Wire Working". (Source: Original Apprentiship Agreement). Partner (Manager) in James Chesterman & Co. Ltd., Bow Works, Sheffield. Lived at 56 Coalpit Lane (marriage certificate) and also Parklane Broomhall Park. 1880 treasurer of the Ecclesall Co-operative Society. 1881 retired to Bath. (Source: page 70 of 'The First 200 Years. A short history of Rabone Chesterman Ltd'). [This appears to contradict Philip George Chesterman's notes which say: "Sept 1875 - All moved to Bath, 15 Sydenham Terrace." See also the date and address on the memorial card for his first wife].

Undated notes left by Judson Tyndale Chesterman include: "My grandfather Ezekiel Bickham Chesterman born 1823 was a 'righteous' hence difficult man. He did not get on with William [ie James Chesterman's son] and left the firm in about 1870 and went to Bath for the sake of his wife's health. In 1863 the dam burst near the works and the factory was destroyed. He did a great deal to build the whole business up again in Pomona Street where it is today. He was a founder member of the Sheffield and Ecclesall Co-op and its first treasurer (Hon) as he was keen on helping his workmen. I think it is the second Co-op in the country. One of his workmen never took a holiday for 63 years, never was late, never walked on a crack in the pavement and always wore the old fashioned top hat with a bowler type crown to it such as Churchill used! These 'little Mesters' as they were called were a really tough and loyal lot.

My Father was born in 1856 and one of his early recollections was the flood which destroyed the works when the night watchman came running in shouting 'Mr. Ezekiel, Mr. Ezekiel the end of the world has come' and the photo of the devastation was one of the first prints to be published in a newspaper in this country."

EBC married twice. His first wife (marriage date 10 June 1848 at Townhead Street Baptist Chapel Sheffield) was his second cousin Ann Greaves Chesterman, daughter of James Chesterman. She died at 15 Sydenham Terrace, Bath on 4 March 1876(Memorial Card). During 1877 he married Eliza Tupman.

EBC died at 11 St. Lukes Rd., Bath. His will indicates that he also owned 7&8 Westmoreland Villas, Oldfield Park, Bath and 30,31,32&33 Dorset Street, Tibet, near Bath. Interred 24 Jan at Locksbrook Cemetery.

In an email received from Harold Chesterman, on July 9th, 2003, was the following Obituary:-

Obituary from a Sheffield paper, provided by Ann Verney.

William Chesterman

AN EX-MASTER CUTLER
_________

Death of Oldest Survivor
Of the Office.
_________

40 YEARS A MAGISTRATE.
_________

The oldest surviving ex-Master Cutler, Mr. William Chesterman, J.P., died suddenly yesterday at his residence, “Belmayne”, Clarkehouse Road, Sheffield, following a heart seizure in the morning. Although he was 92 years of age, Mr. Chesterman was at his place of business only a few days ago.
Mr Chesterman attained his 92nd birthday just over a fortnight ago. He held the office of Master Cutler as far back as 1880. He had outlived not only his predecessors, but also many of his successors, and, now that he has gone, the senior ex-Master is Mr. James Dixon, who presided over the Company seven years after Mr. Chesterman. The deceased gentleman was a member of the Company about thirty-four years, having been elected seven years before he held the Mastership, and retained his membership until 1907, when he retired. In 1919 he gave a generous benefaction of ¤2,000, which was invested and used for the carrying on of the Company's work. Mr Chesterman was a Church Burgess about twenty years. He was elected in 1901, at the same time as Mr. W.B. Esam when vacancies were caused by the deaths of Mr. Walter Brown and Alderman William Smith. With Mr. S.G. Richardson, Mr. Chesterman had the distinction of being the oldest city magistrate. He and Mr. Richardson were appointed to the Commission of the Peace for the city in 1890.

A Vigorous Work

In the early years of this century Mr. Chesterman was one of the most active members of the Sheffield Ratepayers' Association - a body which was formed to combat extravagant municipal expenditure, and which, among its other work, strongly opposed the Works Construction Department of the City Council and kept a watchful eye on increases in salary. For several years the Association carried on a vigorous work, which extended to the running of candidates for municipal honours, but, like most bodies of this kind, it eventually died a natural death. Mr. Chesterman was its president for some years, and took an energetic share in its work.
Mr. Chesterman was the principal partner in the firm of James Chesterman and Co., Ltd., manufacturers of measuring instruments, Bow Works, Pomona Street, Sheffield, and having spent the whole of his life in the city he was well known and highly respected in business, public, and social circles. Beyond filling the position of Master Cutler, however, and attending the Magisterial Bench assiduously for some years, he never took much part in public affairs. In fact the needs of an important and progressive business kept him fully occupied.

Old Standing Firm

The name of Chesterman in connection with measuring rules is known in all parts of the world where such instruments are used as standing for high quality and accuracy, and the business has enjoyed a high degree of prosperity for more than half a century. Its foundations were laid by Mr. Chesterman's father, Mr. James Chesterman, who possessed an amount of inventive genius which was rare in his day. He was born in London and served an apprenticeship to the making of powder flasks, and in 1820 he came to Sheffield to work at the Cornish Works of James Dixon and Sons. He started in business as the result of an invention for the automatic winding up of tape measures by means of a spring. It was a time-saving device which quickly "caught on." Having no capital he secured a Mr. Hounsfield as partner and started to manufacture his patent tape. At a later period he was joined by Mr. Samuel Fox, of Deepcar, but their works in Nursery Street were nearly washed away by the Sheffield flood. The firm then moved to Bow Works. The next important invention was the steel tape, which has ever since been recognised as the only accurate article for lineal measurement. The late Mr. James Chesterman was constantly bringing out inventions for use in his factory. He died in 1867, and was succeeded by his son, William, who continued in partnership with Mr. Fox until 1895, and afterwards carried on the business alone. The deceased inherited a good deal of his father's inventive faculty, but he also gave more attention to the commercial side of the business and made a point of obtaining the most modern mechanical appliances. So far as plant is concerned the works are almost self-contained. A big business was developed in the United States.
In 1892 the concern was converted into a private limited company.
In 1903 Mr. Chesterman was one of the Sheffield delegates to the Imperial Commercial Congress at Montreal.
The bereaved family consists of two sons and five daughters.
