General Notes: The Australian Dictionary of Biography [Online Edition] states:
HART, EADY (1848-1931), dyemaker, was born on 28 December 1848 at Wolverhampton, Staffordshire, England, second daughter of Isaac Booth, hatter, and his wife Catherine Elvin, late Payne, née Rainals. Eady's paternal grandfather (Isaac) was a governor of the Bank of England, and an uncle Abraham Booth a distinguished chemist. Lured by gold, her family migrated to Victoria, probably arriving in the Francis Henty in May 1854. Eady became a dressmaker. On 14 December 1876 at Wycliff Church of England, Learmonth, she married English-born William Hart, later an engineer with the Ballarat Gas Co. They had four sons and four daughters before he deserted her.

After her children had grown up, Eady augmented her pension with sewing and millinery and by fostering four girls and two boys; they thought this tiny, gifted woman 'one in a million'. Thriftily, using potatoes, she created a blancmange-like breakfast food. She moved often at Ballarat, working also as a taxidermist. Creative, energetic and well organized, she found time to work for the war effort during World War I, in which two of her sons were severely wounded. Experimenting with natural products, Eady made firelighters from the pulverized trunks of grass trees (Xanthorrhoea australis, then known as 'blackboys'). The children hawked them, snowball size, in packs of a dozen. But her great success came from experimenting with natural dyes. Grass trees, when boiled with washing soda and lime, produced a brilliant gold dye, while the various parts of other indigenous plants added a great range of colours.

From 1914 to 1919 Eady struggled with the formalities involved in patenting her natural processes\emdash others used poisonous chemicals. She hoped to provide employment at Ballarat, especially for returned soldiers, but was frustrated when a supporter, who had joined herself to the patent application, foiled attempts to form a company. Meanwhile, on her kitchen stove Eady perfected Hart's Royal Dyes and in October 1921 mounted a sensational public display of soft greys, glowing yellows, a strong black and a wonderful henna. Articles in Work and Energy (England) and the London Daily Express attracted attention. By then, patents had been achieved in Australia, England, India and the United States of America. When entrepreneurs approached her about floating a company, and Ballarat identities offered support, Eady mortgaged her house, formed a syndicate and built a substantial laboratory at Canadian Gully to demonstrate the practicality of her process. Hart's Australian Dyes was incorporated late in 1921, and a big demand for shares followed a display on many fabrics of colours more natural and flower-like than those of rivals. Later, on Mair Street, a factory was built with the hope of reducing German dominance of the Australian market.

Despite technical success, the company failed. Although Eady won awards at the British Empire Exhibition, London, in 1924, she was ruined. An earlier fear that she would end up in a charitable institution, like many inventors, proved accurate. She died on 28 February 1931 at Ballarat District Hospital and was buried in the new Ballarat cemetery. Her eight children and six foster children survived her.

General Notes: Ron Granger provided the following Information about his Ancestor:
Robert was Ship's Carpenter aboard the "Sheffield" that arrived in America, at a Port near the Mouth of the Mississippi, on September the 17th 1844. On board with him as passengers were his Uncle, James Smith, his Wife, Sarah Hill and their Family, who migrated to America.
It is believed that Robert later went to Australia, sailing on July the 27th, 1853; and returned to Nottingham in 1860. Australia did not agree with him as he had earlier contracted Yellow Fever. As a Result, he had lost his Hair and had to wear a Wig.
Further Information from Ron Granger in January 2022 stated,
Robert never lived in USA. As a ships carpenter he sailed as crew member many times during the emigration of thousands to USA then after his marriage he emigrated to Ballarat to the OZ gold fields making wooden homes for miners. He had 2 children in OZ John and James. The Family returned to England about 1860

James Smith Granger b 1857 OZ died 1937 in Nottingham. He worked for Jardines the lace firm and was a travelling salesman - hence why he went on several occasions to USA and also went to Russia selling lace machines. He prospered until the 1st world war when you may know the bottom fell out of the lace trade. Lace industry collapsed in Nottingham. After that he struggled but managed to survive. During his later life he was in a wheel chair most of the time with arthritis. He was my grandfather Frank Granger's older brother. He married Sally Deacon who came from Barton in the Beans where the Deacon family for 200 years or so had run the Sunday school, and provided 2 minister at the chapel - that is another story.

AUSTRALIA
The reason James Smith Granger was born in OZ was because in 1852 his father Robert Granger, Cabinet Maker, married Ann Hooton and emigrated to Melbourne and Ballarat in OZ. Robert is my gt grandfather - He was prior to his marriage a ships carpenter and when he got to the goldfields at Ballarat he used his carpentry skills to make log cabins I am told for the miners - what gold he obtained was lost He lost a baby in OZ and by 1860 had caught Malaria - lost his hair - and was advised to return to UK for heath reasons. He came back to Nottingham around this time - his 2 younger sons were born in Nottingham - Booth and Frank whilst Mira? (not sure where born) John and James were born in OZ - Robert's family grew up in Palin Street (north west Nottingham, near Radford. Voyage there and back too 3 months on outward journey and 3 months coming home.

Robert Granger's wife Ann Hooton came from Paris and most likely came originally from Holland with such a surname. They were Methodists.

General Notes: In an e-Mail from Ron Granger, received in February 2014, he comments:
Francis Smith Granger was chairman of the deacons at Broad Street Baptist
Chapel which closed down around 1900 and the membership transferred to
Mansfield Road Baptist Church. This closure was mainly due to the people
not living any more in the lace making area of Nottingham adjacent to Broad
and Stoney Streets.. Thank you Christopher for filling in missing
information on family I understood that Mary Hannah and Sarah Ann were lay
preachers at the Baptist church and I know around 1949 Sarah Ann was on the
membership roll. - but in a home.

The Baptist information may help folks i.e. Broad Street chapel was pastored
by Rev Robert Smith 1760 - 1829 when it opened in 1815 and Mary Granger
b1791 widow of John Granger b 1787 who died 1837 was a member George
Baldwin was church secretary in 1815 and James Smith 1764 - 1843 builder was
an Elder. Prior to 1815 Rev Robert Smith was pastor of Stoney Street
Baptist Church from around 1780/90 (still there I believe empty at
Plumptree Place) around this time Robert Smith baptised by immersion 32
people in the river Trent.. He had a long pastorate and he only left
Stoney Street due to a false accusation made by an assistant minister I
think his name was Cotton. When Robert Smith left Stoney St so all the
family members moved with him to Broad St and I guess James Smith had a hand
in the building work. Broad Street had a burial patch and around 1900
many Granger/Snith graves were moved to the General Cemetery. You must
remember in its early days Stoney St had around 400 membership and over 1000
Sunday school scholars - many at various preaching stations around
Nottingham. In fact Robert pioneered a number of the Baptist Churches
such as Front Street Arnold and others around the 1800s.

General Notes: In The Morning Sun Herald, February 1, 1894:-
LE BOUTILLIER - Mrs Le Boutillier died at her home in Morning Sun, 1am, Thursday morning Jan 25th, 1894, aged 67 years, three months and twenty seven days. She was born in England and came to America in early life. In 1854 she was married to Mr. Chas.W.Le Boutillier who died while engaged in the discharge of his duties as a surgeon in the Union Army during the civil war. Her funeral was attended by a large number of friends in the Presbyterian Church on Saturday afternoon, Jan 27th 1894. To speak of her departure as a death would not be a fit description, for death is a dreadful event in human experience, in which there is no Christian faith. She fell asleep in Jesus' arms, and was taken to the place which He had prepared for her. Nothing other than the Heaven of the Bible would be a suitable abiding place for such an unselfish and saintly spirit, as this disciple of Christ was. Modest and retiring in her disposition she kept herself from the public glare. But the atmosphere of her home was charged with such gentle refinement and genuine Christian grace that even a casual caller would not fail of feeling it. Her loss therefore, is felt sorely by a circle of friends and by the Church of which she was a member for so many years. As for the bereavement of her most devoted children, this is too sacred to comment on, or more than mention. We can only say 'Now we see through a glass darkly but then face to face,' The funeral was conducted by the Pastor, assisted by Revs C D Trumbull, J B Jackson and D T Campbell.
