General Notes: In an Article received from Andrew Griffiths in May 2014, he discussed the Written Works of Abraham and listed some of them as follows:
In an extended article for the Mechanics Magazine in 1832 titled „Hints on the Chemical Character of Contagion", Booth held forth on methods of ventilation and fumigation and proposed a mechanism to explain the spread of cholera, based on the „miasma" concept which was current at the time. This was rather unfortunate, because the miasma approach threatened to draw attention away from the importance of hygiene and sanitation which finally defeated the disease. This is not to say that Booth was indifferent to these topics, but the miasma theory focussed on the airborne infection route rather than the actual route of cholera contagion, which was waterborne.
·On the other hand, Abraham Booth was an early environmental campaigner in his appeal to clean up the River Thames, made in his early Treatise on Water. He was also cited as one of the first to advocate the use of charcoal to filter out noxious components from drinking water (in 1830).
·Also in 1830, Abraham published warnings about counterfeit coins which were then in circulation, containing lead, bismuth and tin, but no copper, and explained how to identify them by weighing.
·He published an article in the Journal of the Faraday Society in 1832, presenting the results of experiments with a vacuum evaporation method to improve the process for refining sugar.
·In 1832, he proposed the use of a lead-antimony-mercury alloy for the sheathing of ships' hulls, which he thought would be cheaper than copper.
·In 1833, he investigated bee-keeping methods at the Marquess of Blandford's estate in Berkshire and made recommendations for improving of the quality of the honey. A well-known apiarist described Abraham as „a young man of first-rate abilities".
·In 1836, Abraham Booth, the „practical chemist of Goswell Road" waited on the Lord Mayor to warn against selling the carcases of animals that had been killed in a warehouse fire, even for the purpose of making soap. The meat was contaminated with arsenic which had been stored in the same warehouse.
·In 1841, he was heard as an expert witness in the investigation of the cause of a disastrous fire at the Tower of London and advanced his theories of spontaneous combustion.
·He wrote twice to the Lord Mayor of London, in 1841 and 1847, warning of the dangers of fires breaking out spontaneously. The letters were printed in the newspapers with much praise for this „Gentleman of very high scientific attainments".
·In 1844, Abraham was a „casual spectator" in Clerkenwell Police Court, where a boy was charged with begging. He intervened to point out that the boy was obviously very ill and should be in a hospital rather than a prison. He was complimented by the judge on his intervention and the boy was sent to the workhouse to receive medical attention.
·In 1845, he investigated the chemistry of the „potato distemper", that was starting to ravage the Irish farms, postulating a „chemical miasma" as the cause of the disease. The results were presented in a lecture at the Adelphi School of Agricultural Chemistry in the Strand.

General Notes: In an email in November 2003, Ron Granger wrote:-
The details re James Smith b 1793 are in the dedication certificates of Broad Street Baptist Chapel, and Stoney St Baptist Chapels' Nottingham. James Smith Senior's brother was Minister of Stoney St from 1785c until 1815 when he became minister of Broad St Baptist Chapel Nottingham until Robert died in 1829. James continued as Elder of this chapel and Registrar. so when you see the records of this Chapel which are with the Mormons in their nonconfirmist records you should find all the dedication certificates of the Smiths, Baldwins, Grangers, and maybe Samuel Smith’s Children, as the whole Family were Members of Broad Street Chapel from 1815 until in the case of some of them, until it closed in 1903; and all the membership joined Mansfield Road Baptist Chapel - where there was a Rev Francis Smith and Rev Robert Smith 1760 - 1829 picture in the vestry, and a plaque on the wall. This Plaque was taken down in the 1980s and not put up again after decorations at the Chapel. Stoney St Chapel and Broad st Chapels were in the Lace Warehouse area of Nottingham in the late 19th century. As all the people left this area it became an inner city areawith not many people, so the Churches were closed at the turn of the 20th century and the memberships transferred to Mansfield Rd. After James went to America, he had a Farm to the west of Virginia Grove, in Louisa County, in Iowa.

Noted events in his life were:

• Immigration: sailing to what was Texas, landing at a Port near the Mouth of the Mississippi River and making their way Up-River from there, 1844, Morning Sun Iowa USA.

James married Sarah HILL [9070] on 28 Nov 1816 in St Mary's Nottingham Nottinghamshire England. Sarah was born in 1796, died on 30 Jun 1882 in Marshall Township Louisa Co. Iowa USA at age 86, and was buried in Jul 1882 in Marshall Cemetery Marshall Township Iowa USA.

General Notes: An Article in the Morning Sun Herald, of Thursday morning Aug.3 1882. Another 'old Settler' has passed away. Mrs. Sarah Smith died at the residence of her daughter, Mrs. Boutillier, on Sabbath, June 30, at the ripe age of 85 years and ten months. Mrs Smith with her husband and eight children emigrated from England to this country in the summer of 1844, and in the fall of the same year they came to Iowa, and settled on a farm, West of Virginia Grove. Mr Smith died about 18 years ago, since which time Mrs Smith has been living with her daughters. The deceased was an affectionate mother and a devoted Christian. In early life she became a member of the Missionary Baptist Church, but not finding the Church of her choice in this locality, she attached herself to the Presbyterian Church, of which she remained a consistent member till called to the 'General Assembly and Church of the First Born, which are written in Heaven'. When her mind was so far gone that she nolonger knew any earthly friend, the question was asked her, "Do you know Jesus" to which, with a significant smile, she replied: 'Yea, I do, I love him'. In his embrace she quietly went to sleep.
