General Notes: The Boynes

"The Boynes" is a charming bungalow built all on the ground floor except for J.M. Barrie's first floor extension. It had been his sister's home for over forty years and his country retreat. The house took it's name three building plots of lane, which in 1860 were called "Hither Boyne", "Middle Boyne" & "Nether Boyne" respectively, but it first appears on an Ordinance Survey map of 1870 as just one house called "The Boynes".
Within the spacious tiled floor entrance there is an old stained glass oil lamp suspended from a ceiling hook and every new owner is told "That is the Barrie lamp and it stays with the house". This is a tradition that has been respected for generations, for this is the lamp (or so it is said), that became the inspiration for Peter Pan's greatest friend, Tinkerbell.

"Sacred to the memory of Olive, the dearly loved child of Robert & Florence Walton"
"Of such is the kingdom of Heaven"

From two seperate sources, B.W. & S.P., It appears that Florence blamed Robert for Olive's death. He maintained that the baby had died as a result of illness and so refrained from obtaining medical help. It is said that Florence never got over the death of the child. Apparently she never spoke to Robert again. As a parent myself, I can deeply sympathise with the emotion and the trauma of this event. They both must have been devastated.

General Notes: Notes for JOHN FREDERICK EDWARDS:
Documents possessed: Will, Birth Certificate, Death Certificate

In Robert Walton's will, John is named twice as Frederick John Edwards.

Fred retired early, in the 1930's. The Regent Street leases expired in 1926. The cost of renewing the lease & rebuilding the property to the required specification, together with the great slump in sales at the time and the fact that Charlie had overbought, led to financial disaster. Charlie had no choice, but to close down the business.

Fred was the accountant, Charlie the salesman.

There is no doubt that the firm, in it's hayday, made a great deal of money. Also the family married well.

The family lived above the shop initially. In those days, the shops were facades, hiding barns!

One of the sisters married Arthur Baron = Express/United Dairies
