General Notes: Memoirs of Francis Lovis Vosper:

Elizabeth [Vosper] who in 1838 married Mr. Walter Lawry of the parish of Roche, Cornwall, a farmer and Wesleyan local preacher. They settled at Bohetheric in the parish of St. Dominic. They lived to the age of 75 and 77 respectively and died at the residence of their daughter Mrs. John Rickard at Manaton, South Hill, and are buried at St. Dominic’s. They were Methodists of the old stamp, attentive to the last detail of Methodist usage. It was a custom amongst the Methodists of that age, on entering a place of worship to carefully brush the hair down over the forehead. Many times I have watched dear old uncle Lawry, Mr. Geo. Sargent and other old time Methodists raise their hands and carefully and solemnly perform this rite before taking their seats.

43. Daniel VOSPER [26077] was born in 1814 in Linkinhorne Cornwall England, was baptised on 06 Jun 1814 in Linkinhorne Cornwall England, died on 27 Dec 1882 in St Dominic Cornwall England at age 68, and was buried in St Dominic Churchyard Cornwall England.

General Notes: Memoirs of Francis Lovis Vosper, 1912: Grandfather [Daniel] Vosper farmed Coombe in the parish of Linkinhorne where my father was born on May 17th 1814. Soon after my father’s birth they moved to Castlewich, near Callington, where they lived until 1830, when grandfather moved to St. Dominic where, as the older of his sons were growing up to manhood and marrying, he took the farm afterwards occupied by Uncle Lawry, also Haye and Chapel. He also took the Quays and Stores at Cotele and engaged in general merchandise, coal, lime, grain, timber and malt. In conjunction with the late Earl of Mount Edgecombe who died in 1860, he built the road leading to Cotele Quay from Bohetheric and the bridge over the creek at Cotele. The surveys for this road were made by Mr. Rettalic of Liskeard, whom I have mentioned in my book "Real Life Sketches". This road was opened in 1831 and while it was being constructed, my father then a lad of 16 rode his lordship’s horse. This horse 15 years before had been shot through the neck at Waterloo where his lordship, then Viscount Valletort, was serving on the staff of The Duke of Wellington.
Grandfather died on December 30th 1852 and grandmother survived him about 6 years. They lie in the old church at St. Dominic, and you may judge how sacred that spot is to me, when I tell you that my father and mother, two sisters, a brother, your dear mother and little John Richards, John and Frank’s eldest brother who lived only 3 days are buried there.

My father was a fine built over six-foot in height and strong limbed. He was an intelligent man, and with his brothers and sisters received a, what was then for his class a good education. He read and wrote plainly and intelligibly. His handwriting was exceptionally good. He was quick and accurate at figures and understood land and cubic measurements also machinery, he understood farming and methods of transacting business. He was also possessed of tremendous energy and the way he worked either for himself or for others incited everybody’s admiration. Although not a professing Christian, he entertained a high regard for the ordinances of religion and preachers and men of that class were always heartily welcome at our house. This as will be shown in the course of the story was destined to have an important bearing on my afterlife. He had an affectionate disposition and like mother a keen sense of humour. He was also a great reader and took a keen and intelligent interest in what was going on in the world. But he was impulsive, and although I said understanding business he would when slightly under the influence liquor, would do what no man with an evenly balanced mind would think of doing. He was liable to be over elated with a small financial success and his over sanguine spirit would over estimate his gettings beyond the bounds of all reason. This trait in his character will account for much that I have to relate in the course of this narrative.
At the time of their marriage my father held a position at the Cwm Avon iron works near Swansea. He afterwards took a farm named Longoaks, in the parish of Penmaen, county of Glamorgan, this farm was the property of Major Penrice of Penrice Castle. He quit his farm in 1842 and returned to Cornwall and here I may make a great digression. There were 14 children born to them in less than 16 years including two pairs of twins.

In the spring of 1876 Father bargained with the Lord Mt Edgecombe for the timber standing on the south side of the hill adjoining the "brake". This consisted of about 45 oak trees standing in about 3/4 of an acre of land. Father agreed to pay 80 pounds for the timber as it stood, clear the land ( there was no underbrush ) and build a wall 8 feet high across the head of the ground .We set to work at once, we let the contract for grubbing and grinding the trees and sawing off the stumps which were afterwards hauled to the top of the hill with blocks and tackle. While watching this operation, Father incautiously got in the way when a stump rolled over on him crushing him to the earth. Father never recovered from this accident, two bones of the spinal column were displaced and he sustained other injuries .He was practically crippled for the rest of his life. The price of timber owing to the rumour of war with Russia dropped from, 2/6d per solid foot in the Spring of 1876 to 1/6d in the fall. The Spring was cold, heavy frost snow and cold winds at Easter, which came in the middle of April. Then we had Llewellyn’s trouble already referred to. The season was late and the crop was far from good. Altogether 1876 was an anxious time. 1877 was little if any thing better. Cold winds and frosty mornings in the spring kept us anxious. That year Lord Mount Edgecombe embanked and partly drained the 30 acres of marsh adjoining our place ,about seven acres of this was afterward, viz, on the death of Mrs. Clatworthy in 1882 turned over to us, that is two corners about 1 acre was added in 1877 and the other 6 acres in 1882. The clearing and draining of those two corners was a strenuous job. Brother George came home that fall and spent a week at the Edgecombe Hotel, Beeralston entertaining friends and running up a bill for 30 pounds, which Father afterward paid. In the same fall Father settled my sister in their little home in Chacewater. An anxious, strenuous year.

Daniel married Grace BORLEY [26223] [MRIN: 10038], daughter of James BORLEY [26224] and Ann Sloggett LOVIS [26225], on 30 May 1837 in St Dominic Cornwall England. Grace was baptised on 13 Aug 1810 in Bere Ferrers Devon England, died on 28 Oct 1882 in St Dominic Cornwall England at age 72, and was buried in St Dominic Churchyard Cornwall England.

General Notes: Grace: Memoirs of Francis Lovis Vosper, 1912: She was the 13th child of James and Ann Sloggett Borley or Burleigh and was descended from the Earls of Burleigh, grandmother’s name was Ann Sloggett Lovis and from an old document .... which is in Grandfather’s handwriting, I find they were married in 1790. Grandfather declared that when that page of his family register was full he would not turn over the leaf, which accounts for Mother and Aunt Jane’s names not being there. Of their 14 children 10 survived them.
My mother Grace Borley was born at Esenidge, close to where Beeralston Railway Station is now situated in 1810, and a few months later the family moved to North Hooe farm, from which place she was married to my father in early 1837.
My mother was one of the best noblest and purest women I was ever brought into contact with. Combined with a dignity which on occasion developed into sternness, she possessed a geniality of temperament and a keen sense of humour, which flashed out frequently into witty repartee, which incited the admiration, and secured the affection of all with whom she was brought into contact.
In her family relations she was affectionate and sensitive to such a degree that I am sorry to relate it caused her to be imposed on in opposition to her better judgment. In her business relations she was the embodiment of truthfulness and integrity. She was a deeply religious woman. For nearly fifty years previous to her death a member of the Congregational Church. She associated freely with other churches and as the River Tamar separated us from her church at Beeralston, she generally attended and lent her support to Methodist Church at St. Dominic.

General Notes: Memoirs of Francis Lovis Vosper, 1912: In the fall of 1858 my sister Mary went to Devonport to assist a Mrs. Dawe in taking in taking care of her children. Mrs. Dawe was related to my Father, and they treated her with the utmost deference and affection and she was in every way worthy of it. She was at that time twenty years old, tall and graceful in her bearing, gentle and refined in her manner and affectionate in her disposition. What wonder that everyone loved her? But God saw fit to take her from us. In March 1859 she was taken with an illness which developed into typhoid fever, and she died on Sunday evening, April 16th 1859.
