General Notes: Notes for JAMES MARTIN:
Martins sailed on 7th July 1852 -
arrived in Australia 23rd Oct. 1852, with Charles 6 yrs and Caroline 4 yrs old.

"SIR EDWARD PARRY''.

The 'Sir Edward Parry' was a vessel of 575 ton, Master was W.McLeod and the Surgeon Superintendant was J.P. Lawrence.
The Ship was built at Sunderland in 1847 and belonged to Gilmore & Harrison of the Port of London. Her hull had been sheathed with yellow metal in 1850 to prevent the growth of weeds and barnacles which would slow the vessel when sailing.
She left Gravesend on a mild day with a temperature of 66 degrees and a south- erly wind and sailed to Plymouth to pick up her West Country emigrants amongst whom were your Martins. The weather became much warmer and at Plymouth it reached 84 degrees, with warm south-easterly winds, as the vessel sailed on July 7th.
This was the vessel's second voyage to the Colony. She carried 235 government immigrants, all arriving in good health, with the ship very clean and uncrowded.
The latter was probably instrumental in keeping the immigrants so healthy, with- out a single death at sea. There was a schoolmaster on board and little Charles may have attended lessons with him when weather permitted. The passengers realized that they had enjoyed a particularly pleasant passage out, and on arrival presented the Master with a testimonial thanking him and his officers for their care.
They mentioned his own kindness, attention and gentlemany manner towards them.
The unremitting and uniform kindness and care of Dr. Lawrence and the high quality of provisions and water provided for them.
