General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in late July 2016, she included the following:
Our interest here focuses on Alice Stevens. Quite by chance I came upon a recent blog by Paul Gallagher on flashbak.com entitled "Alice Stevens Her Book Given Her by the Revd Mr Orme of Oakham: The Story" (<http://flashbak.com/alice-stevens-her-book-given-her-by-the-revd-mr-orme-of-> o akha m - th e-s tor y-55922 /). He describes how he discovered the book whilst clearing out his father's belongings and surmised that it must have been bought by his father in the 1940s or 50s. He was intrigued enough by the inscriptions on the fly leaves to do some research on Alice Stevens and the Rev Orme. He concluded that this was the Alice Stevens who had married William Stanger in 1789 - our Alice Stevens in other words. Paul' s narrative is rather lengthy but he does reveal that the Rev Thomas Orme was the curate of Exton 1767-1700 and had also been usher and headmaster of Oakham grammar school 1778-1796. More importantly he posted pictures of the book with young Alice's handwriting for us to wonder at over two centuries later.

General Notes: William was a Farmer of Tydd St.Mary, in Lincs. from Geoffrey Stanger, 8/8/1989.
"Betty" Spender's letter of Jul. 30, 1988, mentions the Gravestone of William in Fleet Hargate Baptist Churchyard as follows: William Stanger late of Tydd St.Mary's died April 26th, 1822, in the 57th year of his age. Also: Mary his Wife, of Wisbech, age 95 died on Aug. 15, 1865. Also: William Stanger, M.D. Son, who died Mar. 11th, 1857 in Natal, South Africa. ...
Geoffrey Stanger, in his letter of December 6, 1989 states that William was probably born and lived at Strawberry Hall in Tydd St.Mary. However when his Father died, his Brother John took Strawberry Hall, while William lived at Tydd Gote, a hamlet in the Parish of Tydd St.Mary. (Means 'Sluice')

William married Mary DENT [3829], daughter of Joseph DENT [3885] and Jane HALL [25501], on 5 Aug 1801 in Parish Church Haugh Lincolnshire England. Mary was born about 1770 in Maltby Le Marsh Lincolnshire England, died on 15 Aug 1865 in Wisbech Cambridgeshire England aged about 95, and was buried about Aug 1865 in Baptist Chapel Fleet Hargate Lincolnshire England.

General Notes: "Betty" SPENDER believes that Mary Dent Smith's (nee Stanger) Mother lived at Wisbech. There may be a connection with "Strawberry Hall", which seems to figure prominently in the "History of the Smiths" H.U.SMITH, from information from "Betty" SPENDER in her letter of July 7, 1988. ...
See Note under Mary's Husband William re: Strawberry Hall.

Ann married Rev. Charles JERRAM M.A. [3845], son of Charles JERRAM [102866] and Mary KNUTTON [102867], on 24 Apr 1798 in Tydd St Mary Lincolnshire England. Charles was born on 17 Jan 1770 in Parish of Blidworth Nottinghamshire England and died after 1848 in Witney Oxfordshire England.

General Notes: In an e-Mail received from Sandra Boudrou in November 2014, she included an extract from the Dictionary of National Biography as follows:
Jerram, Charles (1770-1853), evangelical divine, born 17 Jan 1770, in the parish of Blidworth in Sherwood Forest, Nottinghamshire, was son of Charles Jerram, a member of an old but somewhat impoverished Derbyshire family, who farmed his own freehold land. His mother, Mary Knutton, a pious woman of presbyterian descent, was the daughter of a farmer of the same parish. By her he was devoted from his infancy to the work of the ministry.
He was placed under the tuition of the Rev. T Curaham, the curate of Blidworth, a man of strong evangelical views, with whom he remained many years, accompanying him in his successive removals, first as pupil and subsequently as assistant teacher. About 1790 he became assistant at a unitarian school at Highgate, London. In 1793 he entered Magdalene College, Cambridge He obtained the Norrisian prize in 1796, graduated B.A. in 1797, as last wrangler and proceeded M.A. in 1800. In 1797 he took holy orders, and served his first curacy at Long Sutton, Lincolnshire. The parish had become greatly demoralized under a succession of non-resident vicars and inefficient and immoral curates. Jerram speedily worked a wholesome change.
In October 1805 ill-health led Jerram to remove to Chobham in Surrey, where Cecil was vicar, and he acted as his curate till Cecil's death in 1810, when he succeeded to the benefice. At Chobham, as at Long Sutton, he prepared private pupils for the universities and he acquired a very high reputation as a tutor. He finally relinquished the work of tuition in 1822. In 1834, he was presented the lucrative rectory of Witney in Oxfordshire, which he held till his death, his son, succeeding him at Chobham. His health began to fail in 1844 and on Good Friday 1848 he preached his last sermon in Witney Church.
Jerram may be regarded as one of the very best representatives of the second generation of the evangelical school, both in its excellences and its defects. In 1798 he married MARY STANGER [should be Ann Stanger, Mary's Sister], daughter of a Yoeman of Tydd St Mary, Lincolnshire by whom he had a large family. Two sons, James and Samuel, were in holy orders. The former, rector of Fleet, Lincolnshire, was his biographer.

Noted events in his life were:

• Ministry: Vicar of St Laurence, acceeded to the Ministry, 14 Aug 1810, Chobham Surrey England.

• Occupation: a Church of England Clergyman, Vicar for over 20 Years, Chobham Surrey England.
