this Individual was shown as a Son of William Thomas Stanger and Hannah Cooper.
However, if Hannah was roughly the same Age as William Thomas, she would be too old to bear this Child. I have therefore assumed that he was probably the illegitimate Son of one of their Daughters, and since no Death Date has been found for Mary, she is the most likely Daughter to have been the Mother. I have assumed that he was subsequently considered a Child of William Thomas and Hannah.

General Notes: John moved to Bessels Green and "begat" the "Kent Stangers". ...
from Geoffrey Stanger's Descendant Chart of August 8, 1989. ...

In an eMail to Geoffrey Stanger, Mrs. Susan J. Mills, MA, MCLIP [Sue Mills], Librarian, Regent's Park College in Oxford sent the following:
I have found a brief and not very informative obituary of the Rev. John STANGER in the Baptist Magazine of 1823 that states that he was " for many years the respectable pastor of the Calvanistic Bapitist Church in the village".
We do not have a hisorty of that church which must have been the Particular Baptist Church but we do have the typed transcriptions of some of the early records of the General Baptist Church in Bessells Green as edited and published by Leonard J. Maguire (who died very recently) for the General Baptist Assembly in 2002. Both John and Mary Stanger, his wife, are mentioned in that 1767 - 1769 including the following excerpts:
"At our Church Meeting held on the 1st March 1769 it was agreed Br. John STANGER do continue to dwell in the house until Midsummer next and to have the liberty of the Meeting House to teach school at the same time, but not longer, and not to preach amongst us without friend Benge, our Elder's concedent, and on the condition friend STANGER at the above mentioned time does peacably go away, the people agree to give him a handsom present in proportion to the distance he goes from this place, at this time is fairly proven that the majority of the members of this Church have signed their names for friend Stanger's dismission".

"At our Church Meeting held 5th October 1769.
1st. As a letter was presented to us at this meeting containing the defence of the separated party and their reasons for their separation upon consideration of which we do agree their defence is deficient and their account was partial and untrue.
2nd. Whereas some time past this Church, being in want of a Minister to assist our worthy pasttor and elder, Mr. Samuel Benge, did invite and give encouragement to Mr. John STANGER to serve us as an assistant to our Elder in the work of the ministry, whom we have found not answerable to our good expectation and hope of him, but on the contrary he having warmly insisted upon principles and doctrines inconsistent with the faith and doctrines of this Church, he, the said John STANGER, having had admonition to no good effect, the Church taking those things into consideration on days appointed, previous notice being given, did then give him a dismission with a reasonable notice and time to provide for himself as well as a promise of gratuity on his departing. To all which, the said John STANGER, having contumaciously opposed himself as well as to the judgement and determination of the Kentis Association and also of our general assembly in London, and also encouraged a schismatical separation of some members from their rightful pastor and from the orderly communion of this Church, we do, therefore, and agree and conclude that the said John STANGER is a contumacious and disorderly person, one that causes divisions and offences among us, and therefore we do exclude him from being a minister or a member of this congregation and of any farther prividege of dwelling in the house".

It was clearly this split which resulted in him setting up a Particular (i.e. Calvanist) Baptist Church in Bessels Green in opposition to the General (Arminian) Baptist Church already there.

In a Stanger Tree sent by Mark Ward in April 2008, he includes,

John was brought up on the farm and was closely associated with the Baptist Church, of which his father was co-pastor with William Painter, who gave him his early education. From the age of nine to fifteen he worked with his brother on the farm. the work was arduous and subject to various hazards but he remained in good health and praised God for it and for his preservation from dangers to which he had been exposed "from horses and carriages which I almost constantly attended". He had an emotional temperament and even wept when impressed by a sermon. He enjoyed attending religious and other meetings and listeneing to adult conversation. At the age of 12, while on the farm, he had a religious experience of which he wrote "my heart presumed I should not lose the relish all my days". He continued: "whether this came from the Holy Spirit of God and was a divine motion on the face of the waters or whether it was the natural operation of my thoughts and affections, I cannot decide".

John travelled a lot preaching and finally settled in Kent.

In 1770 he was instrumental in building the Baptist Church at Bessells Green in Kent where he lived over the next nine years with his wife and children. There is a Plaque [believed to be] in the Church/Chapel that reads as follows:

This Tablet is Erected by the Church and Congregation.)
to perpetuate the Memory of the Rev. John Stanger;
who departed this Life the 15th of April 1823,
Aged 80 Years.
He was the Founder of this Church, amongst whom, and
In many of the Towns and Villages adjacent, his
Ministerial Labours were arduous, and eminently useful,
Upwards of fifty-four Years.
He was a profound Divine,
A Correct Preacher,
Zealous and affectionate,
Through Grace, he injoyed the earnest of Heaven:
Free Grace, the grand Subject of Revelation.
His Voice proclaimed to Thousands!
Many of whom, are now his Joy, and Crown of Rejoicing.
He was favoured with the Smiles of his beloved Master,
And while reposing in His bosom, his Soul bade adieu
To all that is corruptible.
Reader!
The Body of this venerable Pastor, is confined in the Grave,
But it shall soon hear a Voice irrestible. "Arise! and put on
Incorruption."
