20. Fanny Elizabeth SIMMONDS [11671] (Joseph8, John2, William1) was born in 1841 in Coventry Warwickshire England and died in 1919 in Auckland Auckland New Zealand at age 78.

Fanny married John WRATT [12396] [MRIN: 5372], son of George WRATT [12397] and Jane BACON [12398], on 04 Jan 1861 in Waimea West Nelson Marlborough New Zealand. John was born in 1834 in Nottingham Nottinghamshire England, died on 17 Nov 1889 in Park Road Auckland New Zealand at age 55, and was buried on 19 Nov 1889 in Purewa Cemetery Auckland New Zealand.

General Notes: Elsie Curnow says he married Rose TIER In 1902.

He had a pet shop in Queen St, Auckland "Johnny Walker's pet shop was quite famous", and died at his Avondale residence on 4 August 1927.

Informed he had 3 children - Reginald, Eileen & Elsie.

   31 M    v. Herbert Edward WRATT [12403] was born on 20 Mar 1870 in Wairau Valley Marlborough New Zealand and died about 1960 in Melbourne VIC Australia aged about 90. Another name for Herbert was Herbert WYATT.

   32 F    vi. Winifred WRATT [12404] was born on 11 Feb 1872 in Wairau Valley Marlborough New Zealand and died on 21 Jan 1961 in Napier Hawke's Bay New Zealand at age 88. Another name for Winifred was Chambers.

21. Ann Maria SIMMONDS [11668] (Joseph8, John2, William1) was born on 28 Dec 1842 in Queen's Gardens Nelson Marlborough New Zealand and died on 30 Jul 1934 in Wellington Wellington New Zealand at age 91.

General Notes: She was the daughter of Joseph SIMMONDS and Frances Lavina THACKER who arrived in the "Fifeshire", the first ship to bring settlers to Nelson.(Fifeshire left London on 15 September 1841 and arrived at Nelson on 2 February 1842, and was wrecked there when leaving on 27 February 1842).
Joseph & Frances emigrated with an infant daughter.

After leaving Queens Gardens where Ann Maria was born, the family moved to Moutere but, finding the land unsuitable for farming and the Maoris hostile, they moved to Spring Grove, and finally cut a home out of the bush on the banks of the Wai-iti River.

Her father was also a member of the Nelson Provincial Council.

On 16 August 1881 she married John BAGGE (his 2nd marriage), first Postmaster of Masterton, and on his retirement they moved to Marton.
She was living as a married woman in Masterton in 1893.

Known as Granny BAGGE.

Died 1934 in Wellington.

Ann married John BAGGE [5142] [MRIN: 5135], son of Rev. James BAGGE [11641] and Cecelia RODERICK [11642], on 16 Aug 1881 in Masterton Wairarapa New Zealand. John was born on 22 Nov 1830 in Ardmore Waterford Ireland, died on 22 Dec 1905 in Palmerston North Manawatu New Zealand at age 75, and was buried in Omaka Cemetery Blenheim Marlborough New Zealand.

General Notes: Born in Ardmore, Waterford, Ireland. Ardmore comes from "Aird Mho'r"meaning "the great promontory or hill". Daughter, Alice Rose Cecilia, thinks her father's estate in Ardmore was named 'Ardallan' or'Ardsallagh'.
(In 2002, Sylvia visited Ardmore, and was told that the only Bagge relation alive there is "Countess de Fearney, Main Road, Ardmore, Waterford, Ireland)

Came to NZ from Ireland in 1855.

He went to a college for clergymen's sons, and then to Dublin University. He entered a Bank in Dublin. He got permission to go to a gold rush in Victoria, Australia, in the early 1850s, and then came to NZ and Blenheim. He had a legacy from his mother, Cecilia RODERICK.

1860 he was appointed Asst Clerk, Magistrates Court, Blenheim.

Married a widow, Elizabeth LOCKLEY (nee PUGH) on 6 October 1862 inBlenheim - had 10 children.
(Her daughter, Alice, from her 1st marriage+ 5 children from her 2nd, died of diptheria in August
1868 within 3weeks.)

After she died in 1876, he married Ann Maria SIMMONDS in 1881 and they had one daughter, Muriel.

Postmaster at Blenheim, first Postmaster at Masterton (19 yrs) - retired to Marton. On his retirement in 1895 he was given a biscuit barrel -inscribed in silver "Presented to John Bagge Esq., Postmaster, by thestaff of the Masterton Post and Telegraph Department, 1895".

On his retirement in 1895 he bought a farm near Crofton, Marton, and called it "Hawkestone".

Died in 1905 in P.N., and buried in Omaka Cemetery, Blenheim.

A cousin, John Henry BAGGE, came to NZ and bought an estate at Te Pukenear Tauranga (Bagge's Bush is named after him.)

22. Joseph Henry SIMMONDS [12386] (Joseph8, John2, William1) was born on 06 Nov 1845 in Waimea South Nelson Marlborough New Zealand, died on 30 Jun 1936 in Takanini Auckland New Zealand at age 90, and was buried on 02 Jul 1936 in Purewa Cemetery Auckland New Zealand.

General Notes: Born in Spring Grove, Nelson.

Educated in Nelson; Canterbury College; some experience in farming and public school teaching; accepted as Minister of Wesleyan Methodist church in 1869; Waikato 1869-70; Fiji 1871-3; circuits in Canterbury, Wellington and Auckland districts till 1894; President NZ Methodist Conference 1895; Principal of Three Kings College 1895; Auckland University College Council; Governor Theological Insitute 1896-1910.

He married (1) Sarah HOLDAWAY in 1871, who died in 1905.
He married (2) Annie Louisa WATSON in 1907. She died in 1948 in Auckland, Widow, buried Purewa 5 April 1948. (Lived in Princess St, Takanini, Auckland.)

Sarah HOLDAWAY was from a strong Methodist family. The first 3 yrs of their marriage were spent in Fiji. However the tropical climate did not suit their son, Harold Ernest, and in 1874 they moved back to NZ. After moving around to numerous towns, in 1895 Joseph became the Principal of Three Kings College, a post he held until his retirement in 1916.

Joseph was very interested in the conservation of natural forests, and wrote a book on eucalypts of NZ. He planted many trees at Three Kings.

Will filed 20 July 1936 at Auckland Ct (Retired Method. Minister).Probate BBAE 1570 555/36 - Auckland Archives.

He died of pneumonia/bronchitis/senility in 1936 at the age of 91, and is buried at Purewa Cemetery, Auckland.

Joseph married Sarah HOLDAWAY [12409] [MRIN: 5377], daughter of John HOLDAWAY [12410] and Amelia EYLES [12411], on 26 Apr 1871 in Richmond Nelson Marlborough New Zealand. Sarah was born on 21 May 1849 in Matai Nelson Marlborough New Zealand, died on 25 Jan 1905 in Three Kings Auckland New Zealand at age 55, and was buried on 27 Jan 1905 in Waikumete Auckland New Zealand.
