General Notes: In an e-Mail, dated January 19, 2013, Patrick Grigsby included the following:
Earlier in his army life, Henry Selby Rickards had come to Egypt where he settled in early 1840's, converting to Islam, he went on the Hajj so that he could marry "Hanim" Fatoom. On his conversion, he changed his name to Abdallah (servant of Allah) and was later elevated by the then khedive, Abbas Pasha, and came to be known as Abdallah Pasha il Ingilizi. His Egyptian wife was the daughter of a [religious] Sheik, possibly attached to Cairo's famous Al-Azhar mosque/university. The Family were believed to be direct descendants of the prophet Mohammad; but this is in some doubt. They had seven children, the eldest Amin was known to my mother as 'uncle Amin'. I have the Works of William Shakespear, a tome that is insribed, "To dear Doshia from her uncle - Amin Abdallah - 17/9/18". During the first World War, my grand mother Mariam with my mother and her two sisters were evacuated from Turkey to Egypt whilst my grandfather was with the British/Anzac forces at Gallipoli my uncle William on the Somme in France. In spite of Turkey being on the German side, when the Rickards family returned to Mersin the Turkish authorities handed back, intact with contents, the many properties that my grand father owned in Mersin.
AND, in an e-Mail from Noha Sadek, received on February the 12th, 2013, she substantiated much of what Patrick has said; but added:
Henry Rickards held several positions in the Egyptian administration, including that of the first director of the Egyptian railways in 1853, but he was dismissed the following year when Khedive Said came to power. HSR left Egypt in 1869 for England until a final move to Lebanon in 1876.

General Notes: In an eMail, dated July 14, 2007, Nick Rickards said:
Just some memory folk lore to add to the pot:
It appears that MAR [Mary Ann (Owen) Wilkinson] was in fact cared for in her dotage by Tom and Eliza Wilkinson. The reasoning is that it was only Eliza who had a family near the original Rickards home in Brighton and although MAR lived on in Lansdowne Road, Hove for a number of years after the death of PSR [her Husband], increasingly she would have been alone in a large house.
All her sons had, by around 1890, married and left home or emigrated whilst at least two (probably three) were already dead.
Amongst the daughters, as far as I'm aware, Mary Amelia, Anne Elizabeth and Luisa ran a dress-making business in Hove and frankly, already ladies of a certain age by 1890 - none of them seem to have married and they lived away from home. Hannah was married (several times!) and lived elsewhere, Catherine had "run off" with her Uncle Henry to live in Beirut where she died before her mother in 1890 and I have no details of what finally happened to Constance.
As it was related to me by my father, it was Tom Wilkinson who recovered the Masquerier painting of Mary Anne from a sale of his works long after the artist's death. The story goes that Mary Anne recognised the picture as herself and it remained in the Wilkinson household, until Margery (Eliza's daughter) gave it to my father (her cousin and God-son), not long before she died in 1927.

Eliza married Thomas WILKINSON [23530], son of Peter Richard WILKINSON [23469] and Elizabeth Lydia HODGKINSON [23524], in 1874. Thomas was born on 11 Apr 1848 in Brighton Sussex England and died in 1930 at age 82.

His wife Mariam's father, Hanna being a builder undertook the construction of the Ak Deniz Otel and a row of shops in Mersin's main commercial square. The two family town houses in Mersin and a summer house in the village of Gozne up in the Taurus mountains. They were the first and remained the only British family resident in that South Eastern region of Turkey where my grand father was affectionately known as 'topal Ingiliz', the lame Englishman.
