"James was the first Postmaster and manager of the store at Nireaha which became the name of the settlement in honour of Nireaha Tamaki, the paramount Maori chief of the lands to the west of the Makakahi river.

The Nicholls family had Church of England services in their own home; later, with others, they worshipped at the public school. When in 1898, the Rev John Walker came to Eketahuna, James and his sons became stalwart supporters and acted as lay-readers. Later in 1903 sufficient money had been collected to encourage Nicholls to begin his life's dream of building a church for which he had already given the site."
