Sixth Generation 14. Marian MURRAY [12825] (Alexander6, John4, William3, William2, William1) was born 16 May 1837 in Rogart Sutherland Scotland, died 15 Aug 1890 at age 53, and was buried in Creich Sutherland Scotland.
General Notes:Merrian/Marion married Donald MACKAY in 1868 at Rogart, Sutherland, Scotland. The 1871 census shows Marion with her husband and babies at home with her father. There is no record of the family at Achillie in1881.
As their children were born in different parishes, Donald's work as a forrester may have meant moving around. At the time of their death they were living in Creich.
The family are buried in Creich burial ground. Buried with them is agrandson, Donald MAKCAY (1899 - 23 August 1909).
I cannot find a Creich in Sutherland, only in Fifeshire. There is a Little Creich on Dornoch firth; but it does not show on the Road Atlas. [HUS - Aug.24, 2003]

He married Isabella SIMPSON of Rutherglen in 1835, and had 6 very bright children.

General Notes:William was orphaned at an early age by the early death of his mother and father. William was taken and brought up in the home of his grandparents, John & Ann MURRAY. Ann went to meet the lad off the boat at the seaport of Invergordon.
William went to school at Bonar. Later Donald MURRAY, his uncle, a well-to-do banker of Rutherglen and pillar of the Free Kirk, brought him south. There the Free Kirk Minister adopted him, but rather casually dropped him when he had some offspring of his own. William became a pupil teacher.
Founder of Hong Kong and Shanghai Bank. Known as China Bill.
Records show that he was in China in 1864, Shanghai 1868-71, Calcutta1871-1872. Later he was a sharebroker in London.
Died a wealthy bachelor - left his fortune of 50,000 pounds to be divided between 33 cousins on his father's side. Scottish law did not allow 5 cousins on his mother's side to get a share!
Died in 1915 in London, and buried at Golders Green.
