It transpires that my gt grandmother, known as Ella, was officially registered as Fanny Louisa but christened Fanny Ella Louisa. She is subsequently recorded as Ella in all censuses and also on her marriage certificate to Frank Browne, aka Francis St Clair. I have used the name Fanny Ella Louisa in my records. She was a foxy lady and apart from her affair with James Walker, she gave birth to a second child out of wedlock, Clifford St Clair, aka Clifford Browne. Clifford's birth certificate gives his parents as Francis St Clair and Ella St Clair, formerly Collard although there is no record of such a union until she eventually married Frank Browne and had two more children.

a further eMail from John Edwards [Jan 11, 2007] says:
I think (Fanny) Ella went to the US to stay with James and Julia Walker. I have an Ella Collard, spinster, aged 17, arrived in New York aboard the Oregon on 19 May 1884 having shipped out from Liverpool. If that is the same Ella, then the liaison took place in USA since Dora was born in late 1887.
I don't know when Julia died but it was after Dora's wedding in 1909. James and Julia did raise Dora as their own (a very understanding wife was Julia!) and after James' death they returned to live with Julia's sister in Ramsgate. (1901 census).

TERRIBLE SUDDEN DEATH
The many friends of Mr. J. Wyborn Walker, the well-known insurance man, will learn with regret of his sudden death on Saturday morning. Mr. Walker, who was the Toronto superintendent of the Metropolitan Life Insurance Company of New York, retired the previous evening apparently in perfect health, but at an early hour in the morning, he was seized with an apoplectic fit, and expired before medical aid could be summoned. He was an enthusiastic member of the Sons of England Benevolent Society, and had spent the evening with the brethren of Chesterfield Lodge at their regular fortnightly meeting, where his genial good-fellowship and hearty manner was as warm as ever, giving no indication of the awful proximity of his death. He was a member of Birmingham Lodge, No. 69, where he was highly esteemed and held an important executive office. Deceased, who was about 45 years of age, leaves a widow and a little girl. The funeral will take place tomorrow afternoon, under the direction of Birmingham Lodge

James connection with the Wyborn name comes from James' grandmother's maiden name.. The Wyborn family seat was at Northborne Court some 5 miles south of Sandwich. The family had lived there in various mansions since late Elizabethan times. William Wyborn was mayor of Sandwich from 1735-1746.
There is also a link to Berkshire with Elizabeth Wyborn, daughter of James and Rebecca. She married Captain Henry Boyle Deane, of the Royal Berks militia of Hurst Grove, Berkshire in late 1700s.

General Notes: In an eMail received from his Son, Rod Collard in July 2009, Rod wrote as follows:
His mother was Irene Coker and she died of pneumonia when he was only 8 years old. His father was often at sea. I am not sure what my paternal grandfather did but dad was left in the care of his Aunt Maude Gray of Bridge, Kent during these frequent absences.
His father, Louis was killed when Dad was only 12 years old. It was a motorcycle accident and my father was riding in the sidecar when the bike was hit by a truck and his father died of his injuries. We have some papers relating to the accident and it was clear from these documents that although the insurance company "felt badly for the child they accepted no responsibility for his care or provision".
As an orphan my father was cared for by his Aunt Maude but Ambrose Collard, a descendent of the original Ambrose, was apparently his trustee in charge of his well being. Dad was given the choice to either go to Borneo or Canada. Fortunately he chose Canada. What money he had from his father was used to pay the YMCA to get him to Canada. They were to support him and get him started with a job in this country. They did not. Whatever news Ambrose received from them as to the well being of my father must have been carefully contrived because my father's early life in Canada as a 15 year old orphan was horrible. The YMCA got him to the dock in St. John's Newfoundland and then left him there. No other help was given.
He worked on farms in the Maritimes and Ontario and lived a sad and lonely life. He spoke very little of these years but after his death our mother (who is still living in the home they shared for 50 years) told us some of the stories he reluctantly shared with her.
He worked in a farm near Ottawa and was left to sleep in the barn with no source of heat to keep him warm at night. He somehow ended up in Orangeville (north of Toronto) where he worked for a bachelor farmer for a season and when the harvest was over was sent on his way with no money and no prospects for employment. Somehow he ended up in the tiny hamlet of Puslinch, Ontario where he met my maternal Grandfather Andy Gilmour. Grandfather Gilmour was quite a man. He lost his wife after the birth of their 9^th child. When a home burned down in a nearby village he loaded the family on the sleigh, travelled 20 miles in the snow and returned with the 3 orphaned children who he raised as if they were his own. A family of 12 children. My Father worked for Grandfather Gilmour and other farmers in the area, met the beautiful Jean Gilmour, married her and they raised 4 children of their own. Although he is gone he has 11 grandchildren and 37 great grandchildren who hold his memory in their hearts.
It was a truly tragic childhood and when Dad rarely spoke of his life in England he would tell us of his experience in a private boarding school and the farm where they grew and harvested hops. He spoke so fondly of his aunt Maude and we often wondered why his family, who seemed rather well off, cast him off so callously. My wife and I once bought Mom and Dad tickets to fly to England thinking he would want to go back to the home of his childhood. He said he would rather not as he felt no one wanted him as a child and nothing would have changed.
My Dad was a wonderful father and delightful character. He was a very hard worker. He worked as a farmer, truck driver and letter carrier. He was a talented painter and loved to paint oils in the evening. He was so generous to his children and dearly loved his wife, our mother. Christmas was such a wonderful time in our house. We would have to share in his English breakfast each Christmas morning and Christmas pudding at dinner. He could never get enough for his children and we loved him for it. I remember so fondly that although he only had one week of holidays each summer he would take that week and take my brother and I up to Algonquin Park fishing each year. I still have an image of him steering that boat in the driving rain as I lay huddled warmly under the front deck. He loved to garden and smoke his pipe. He spent his last days with his wife Jean at their small cottage on the banks of the Trent River here in Ontario. I often wonder if it reminded him of his home in England. We all loved him very, very much.

John Collard, who has died aged 89, was an MI 5 officer coaxed away from the Service by his former boss Sir Percy Sillitoe to break a diamond smuggling racket in West Africa in the mid-1950s.
Based in Johannesburg, Collard co-ordinated the elimination of an illegal trade from Sierra Leone which was conducted by a web of officials, policemen and seemingly respectable international dealers through Liberia, where President Tubman claimed to have mines.
The task was completed surprisingly quickly, after little more than three years, and the Oppenheimer family of De Beers announced they were winding up the International Diamond Security Organization, which Sillitoe had set up for them.
But Sillitoe was unhappy with the decision; he encouraged Collard to write a sober account of the operation, then passed the manuscript, after it had been considerably censored by De Beers, to the Sunday Times.
The newspaper gave the manuscript to its staff man Ian Fleming, whose interest in the subject had been whetted by his recent James Bond novel Diamonds are Forever, and he duly tracked down Collard in Zululand. For 10 days in Tangier, Collard helped Fleming work on a series of articles for the newspaper, which were later republished in 1957 as a book under Fleming's name as The Diamond Smugglers.
This was an inferior piece of work; but it contained a vivid portrait of Collard with his inconspicuous good looks: "A man of about 40, dressed in the typical uniform of the Englishman abroad - Lovat tweed coat, grey flannel trousers, a dark blue rope-knit sweater, nondescript tie and, rather surprisingly, a fine white silk shirt of which he later confessed he owned 24.
"He had dark hair flecked with grey, and shrewd, humorous, slate-coloured eyes that turned up slightly at the corners. His smile was warm and his voice quiet with a hint of hesitation. He always spoke with a diffident authority."
For Fleming, Collard exemplified the English "reluctant hero". He appeared like a don or scientist as he thrust his head forward, shoulders stooped and sensitive, with quiet hands leafing through his scraps of paper; "but when he crossed the room he looked like a cricketer going out to bat: gay, confident, adventurous".
The book had an introduction, written by Collard under the pseudonym John Blaize, which carefully discounted Fleming's device of making him a chief and omniscient operator, modestly pointing out that he was simply a member of a team. Collard also warned that the work was incomplete, an observation confirmed by the continuing problem of illicit diamond buying today.
A brewer's son, John Ambrose Collard was born on January 1 1913 and educated at Cranleigh and Keble College, Oxford, where he read History. He qualified as a solicitor in 1938 and, on the outbreak of war, was in the Treasury Solicitor's department; but although this was a reserved occupation he soon managed to get himself commissioned in the Cheshire Regiment in 1940.
The following year Collard was relieved from the boredom of guarding East Anglian airfields by being seconded first to MI 5 and, then in 1942, to MI 11, a section of the General Staff with overall responsibility for the counter-intelligence measures involved in protecting the British Army's Order of Battle and secret weapons.
Collard was demobilised as a lieutenant colonel in 1946, then rejoined MI 5 in a civilian capacity, initially with responsibility for protective security in defence research. Later he served in a senior capacity in Singapore for two years during the Malayan Emergency.
The lack of excitement, compared with the wartime years, meant that when the recently retired Sillitoe invited him to lunch at the Athenaeum to offer him a job that would involve a commercial investigation with good pay and the prospect of tangible results Collard agreed to join. But for all its success, the operation - concerned with greed, the corruption of previously honest men and the often obstructive co-operation of British-hating Afrikaner policemen - left Collard with an unpleasant taste.
At the end of The Diamond Smugglers, Fleming recorded Collard as saying, "I'm sick of crooks and spying on them. All I want is a nice quiet job as a country lawyer. . . or some other job where I can clear all this muck out of my mind."
Deciding to return to the law in England after an absence of 18 years, Collard did a refresher course in the City office of a friend, then joined the legal department of the Reed Paper Group, where he soon became personal assistant to the managing director. But after the International Publishing Corporation gained control, Collard decided to withdraw to his family home at Rye; he then became a partner in a firm of solicitors at Ashford, Kent. But Collard did not lose all taste for adventure.
He first had a motor boat, and then a 31 ft Elizbethan sloop, in which he undertook voyages not only to English ports but also to Holland, France, Spain and Gibraltar. Each year he would make careful, if largely inflexible, plans for a voyage employing his children before the mast.
On one occasion Collard and the crew arrived at Cascais in Portugal to find nobody around, and were using the showers when they were interrupted by the local police - because the club secretary believed that any group which had not filled out the necessary forms must be impostors.
At the end of each voyage, Collard would prepare a careful handwritten record, illustrated with photographs, which twice won Cruising Association prizes for keeping the Best Logbook of the Year. He later became involved in fighting a parliamentary Bill to enable the Kent River Board to obstruct navigation above a barrier on the Rother. In 1978 he published A Maritime History of Rye, which ran to three editions.
Collard was also captain and later a trustee of Rye Golf Club, where he would meet his old Secret Service colleague Sir Roger Hollis and play with an unusual, and inelegant, putter designed to his own specifications.
John Collard was predeceased by his wife, Quita, whom he married in 1941, and is survived by a daughter and two sons.

In an e-Mail received from Jane [Collard] Marineau on October 8, 2011, she stated:
"brother John Ambrose B 1913 d 2002 his ashes are in Rye Sussex with his wife Quita."
