90. Rev. Roynon Jones Washington LATIMER [45526] (Digby8, Edward7, John6, David5, Robert4, James3, John2, James1) was born in Headington Oxfordshire England.

General Notes: He saw the "ravishing McLintock girls" in Barnsley when visiting his sister( Florence who was the wife of Hugh De Spear. Headmaster of a Barnsley school) and swore he'd marry one of them He used to joke that he had to "make do" with Louisa Annie because her sister Mary Emily had already been "taken" by Tom Fox.

Roynon married Louisa Annie McLINTOCK [45542] [MRIN: 16322], daughter of Robert McLINTOCK [45705] and Emily TOMLINSON [45707], on 04 Oct 1887 in Barnsley Yorkshire England. Louisa was born on 26 Oct 1862 in Barkdale Lancashire England.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 134 F    i. Gladys LATIMER [45543] was born in 1888 in Breamore Hampshire England and died in 1979 at age 91.

135 F    ii. Dorothy Probin LATIMER [45544] was born in 1888 in Breamore Hampshire England and died in 1960 in Kew Surrey England at age 72. Another name for Dorothy was Dodo.

General Notes: Dorothy never married, but remained with her sister's family until they returned "home" on her brother-in-law's retirement. She remained in Shanghai, supporting herself by working for the British-American Tobacco Company. Dodo as she was affectionately known was far better suited to life Out East than her sister. One might venture to say Frederic William Carey chose the wrong twin as a diplomat's wife in China, but of the two Gladys clearly displayed all the wifely virtues, whereas in Breamore Dodo was considered rather "fast". Both girls were intelligent and thought a lot, but Gladys kept her opinions to herself, whereas Dodo was never afraid of expressing hers and did not suffer fools gladly. She was flirtatious, witty and considered "loads of fun" by the social set she found in China, but to which in England she had no entré. I believe she fell in love at first sight with Frederic just as her sister did, which is why she never married although the opportunities must have presented themselves.
She let Gladys have the housewifely-childbearing side of their marriage (which Gladys enjoyed) and took for herself the giddy social whirl that Gladys abhorred. All three of them had the best of both worlds! After Frederic died, it was Dodo who found work for her niece Helen with British-American Tobacco to supplement the her mothert's widow's pension, enabling the two boys to continue their education at Marlborough and Oxford. During the Japanese occupation of Shanghai the two sisters were interned for the duration of the war with those other European women who had left leaving too late; they were luckier than most, because Gladys's daughter Cynthia, having married a Norwegian (Norwegians were neutral) was not interned with them, so could visit occasionally with little luxuries like soap, cigarettes, chocolates or new clothes.
After the war they moved to Australia with the Thoresens and lived at North Brighton. But Internment had taken its toll on Dodo, the feisty twin to whom injustice was anathema, and after years of looking after her sister's family she was overtaken by Post Traumatic Stress, followed by dementia. She kept packing a suitcase and racing up the street in the belief that the Japanese were about to invade and determined NOT to be interned by them again. Now that she herself needed care she was placed in Kew Mental Hospital for her own safety and her twin's peace of mind. She died in 1960.
