General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in July 2016, she included this Summary on the Life of Sarah and her Husband:-
We now move to the world of entertainment in the person of John Benjamin Lewis, otherwise known as the Amazing Dr Nix, Man of a Thousand Tricks. A magician who performed for the Prince and Princess of Wales yet a husband who abandoned his wife and children (though to give him the benefit of the doubt, it may have been the other way round).
Sarah Penelope Kidd (also known as Sarah Ellen) was the second child and oldest daughter of Charles Kidd and Sarah Jane Lee born in 1853 in Marylebone, London. In 1881 she is found in Marylebone as Sarah Lewis, wife of John Lewis, Prestidigateur, with their one year old daughter Edith. By 1891 the couple are going by John's stage name of Nix and are living at 62 Delaney St, St Pancras and have two daughters Marie (Edith) and Dorothy. John Nix gives his occupation as Conjuror. They had also had a daughter Ida who had died as a baby.
However, the couple did not marry until 6 Feb 1894 after the birth of their son John 'Jack' Francis Lewis in 1893. Daughter Constance Ellen followed in 1896. Jack and Constance were both born in Scarborough where John senior would often appear on stage.
Things then appear to have gone awry and the couple go their separate ways though Jack appears to have maintained some contact with his father, even appearing with him on stage.
It is difficult to work out exactly what occurred as we only have the census records to go by but in 1901 Sarah is working as a dressmaker in Derby and has Dorothy, John and Constance with her. John Nix on the other hand is living in Highbury with 'wife' Eva and they are still a couple in 1911 this time in North Meols, Southport.
Jane Marshall's Document goes on to record:-
In 1920 Sarah, Jack and Constance sailed to Boston on the SS Colombia departing from Glasgow Scotland. They were going to join Edith who had married Henry Harding in 1902. Edith was a 'palmist', Henry was a showman and photographer though in America he worked as a drug salesman. Since Edith and Henry originally lived in Scotland, it is likely that Sarah lived there too. Henry Harding came from a family of entertainers, his parents were musicians and vocalists and performed recitals with their four children singing to the accompaniment of mother Emma on the piano.
The children had obviously grown up in the entertainment world mixing with musicians and other performers.
Sarah and the other children had settled in the USA where Sarah died on 10 Jan 1943. Jack married Mary McDonald and had two sons, John David and Gary Benjamin.

Noted events in her life were:

• Residence: at 62 Delaney Street with her Husband the "Prestidigateur" and her 2 Daughters, going by the Name of Nix, 1881, St Pancras London England.

• Occupation: a Dressmaker, 1901, Derby Derbyshire England.

• Travel: on board the SS Colombia, out of Glasgow with 3 of her Children, 1920, Boston Suffolk Co. Massachusetts USA.

Sarah married John Benjamin LEWIS [105191], son of George LEWIS [105214] and Mary RUMMENS [105215], on 6 Feb 1894. John was born in 1855 in Pimlico Middlesex England and died on 24 Dec 1944 in Grimsby Lincolnshire England at age 89. Another name for John was Dr. "The Amazing" NIX.

General Notes: In a Document received from Jane Elizabeth Marshall in July 2016, she included the following:
We now move to the world of entertainment in the person of John Benjamin Lewis, otherwise known as the Amazing Dr Nix, Man of a Thousand Tricks. A magician who performed for the Prince and Princess of Wales yet a husband who abandoned his wife and children (though to give him the benefit of the doubt, it may have been the other way round).
This was followed later in the Document by,
Dr Nix performed at theatres all over the country entertaining his audiences with a mixture of conjuring and humour. He was known for his almost spontaneous feats, he worked with very few props and did little in the way of preparation, yet was very popular with the public and with royalty alike.
The Publication "Magicpedia" has this to say about Dr. Nix:
As a youth Nix performed as "The Boy Conjurer" and for a time was associated with John Henry Anderson. Later, Nix became a well-known private and public performer in England. By 1888 he was billed as "The Royal Conjuror" and "The Man of a Thousand Tricks."
Later in his career he gave public shows by talking during a film of his performances. Apparently he would repeat the program showing how each trick was done.
1917 - Dr. Nix attended in person a film of his magic at a theater. As the picture was being shown he 'pattered' to each trick. Afterward it was announced on the screen: 'Dr Nix will now show you how these wonderful things are done.' The programme was repeated and each trick in its turn exposed. [18]

An Jane continued speaking of Dr. Nix as follows:
But it would seem that his private life was as mercurial as his stage performances. After living with Eva for many years they appear to have parted ways for she married Ernest Gormley in 1916. By her age and birthplace I was able to deduce that she was called Eva Annie Farrar Parker born about 1872 in Cambridge and from that I found the 1916 marriage. It doesn't end there though. Ernest Gormley died in 1923 and Eva went looking for her tricksy Nixie again for she and John finally did get married in 1925. By this time of course Sarah and the children had emigrated but whether John knew that is a matter for conjecture -he is given as a widower on his 1925 marriage certificate.
That marriage didn't last too long either. In the 1939 register he is in Manchester and Eva is in Brigg, Lincolnshire but they may have reunited as he died in Grimsby in 1944 (where Eva's mother had died in 1917) although the informant on his death certificate was a J. Brumpton, occupier of 110a Scartho Road (the Scartho Union Workhouse), the address where John had died on December 24th. His own address is given as 34 Wellbeck Road.
Sarah Lewis nee Kidd died 10 January 1943 in the USA. Eva died in Boston Lincolnshire in 1946.
John Benjamin Lewis has always turned up surprises and his 1939 entry is no exception for here he is found at 23 Saint Bees St, Manchester, the residence of the actors Edward and Ellen Livesey. Edward Livesey, born in 1869, was the uncle of the famous actor Roger Livesey (son of Joseph Livesey) known for such films as the 1921 version of The Four Feathers, The Life and Death of Colonel Blimp (1943), Vice Versa (1948) and The League of Gentleman (1960).

Noted events in his life were:

• Residence: with his "Wife", Eva, 1901, Highbury Middlesex England.

• Residence: with his "Wife", Eva, 1911, North Meols Southport Lancashire England.

• Residence: at 23 St Bees Street, the Residence of Actors, Edward & Ellen Livesey, 1939, Manchester Lancashire England.

• Residence at Death: 34 Wellbeck Road, 24 Dec 1944, Grimsby Lincolnshire England.

Children from this marriage were:

+ 26 F    i. Marie Edith LEWIS [105192] was born circa 1880 in Marylebone Middlesex England.

27 F    ii. Ida LEWIS [105194] was born in 1884 and died in 1884. (Infant Death)

+ 28 F    iii. Dorothy Florence LEWIS [105193] was born in 1888 in Marylebone Middlesex England and died in 1977 in Bedford Bedfordshire England at age 89.
