General Notes: Ron Granger provided the following Information about his Ancestor:
Robert was Ship's Carpenter aboard the "Sheffield" that arrived in America, at a Port near the Mouth of the Mississippi, on September the 17th 1844. On board with him as passengers were his Uncle, James Smith, his Wife, Sarah Hill and their Family, who migrated to America.
It is believed that Robert later went to Australia, sailing on July the 27th, 1853; and returned to Nottingham in 1860. Australia did not agree with him as he had earlier contracted Yellow Fever. As a Result, he had lost his Hair and had to wear a Wig.
Further Information from Ron Granger in January 2022 stated,
Robert never lived in USA. As a ships carpenter he sailed as crew member many times during the emigration of thousands to USA then after his marriage he emigrated to Ballarat to the OZ gold fields making wooden homes for miners. He had 2 children in OZ John and James. The Family returned to England about 1860

James Smith Granger b 1857 OZ died 1937 in Nottingham. He worked for Jardines the lace firm and was a travelling salesman - hence why he went on several occasions to USA and also went to Russia selling lace machines. He prospered until the 1st world war when you may know the bottom fell out of the lace trade. Lace industry collapsed in Nottingham. After that he struggled but managed to survive. During his later life he was in a wheel chair most of the time with arthritis. He was my grandfather Frank Granger's older brother. He married Sally Deacon who came from Barton in the Beans where the Deacon family for 200 years or so had run the Sunday school, and provided 2 minister at the chapel - that is another story.

AUSTRALIA
The reason James Smith Granger was born in OZ was because in 1852 his father Robert Granger, Cabinet Maker, married Ann Hooton and emigrated to Melbourne and Ballarat in OZ. Robert is my gt grandfather - He was prior to his marriage a ships carpenter and when he got to the goldfields at Ballarat he used his carpentry skills to make log cabins I am told for the miners - what gold he obtained was lost He lost a baby in OZ and by 1860 had caught Malaria - lost his hair - and was advised to return to UK for heath reasons. He came back to Nottingham around this time - his 2 younger sons were born in Nottingham - Booth and Frank whilst Mira? (not sure where born) John and James were born in OZ - Robert's family grew up in Palin Street (north west Nottingham, near Radford. Voyage there and back too 3 months on outward journey and 3 months coming home.

Robert Granger's wife Ann Hooton came from Paris and most likely came originally from Holland with such a surname. They were Methodists.

General Notes: In an e-Mail from Ron Granger, received in February 2014, he comments:
Francis Smith Granger was chairman of the deacons at Broad Street Baptist
Chapel which closed down around 1900 and the membership transferred to
Mansfield Road Baptist Church. This closure was mainly due to the people
not living any more in the lace making area of Nottingham adjacent to Broad
and Stoney Streets.. Thank you Christopher for filling in missing
information on family I understood that Mary Hannah and Sarah Ann were lay
preachers at the Baptist church and I know around 1949 Sarah Ann was on the
membership roll. - but in a home.

The Baptist information may help folks i.e. Broad Street chapel was pastored
by Rev Robert Smith 1760 - 1829 when it opened in 1815 and Mary Granger
b1791 widow of John Granger b 1787 who died 1837 was a member George
Baldwin was church secretary in 1815 and James Smith 1764 - 1843 builder was
an Elder. Prior to 1815 Rev Robert Smith was pastor of Stoney Street
Baptist Church from around 1780/90 (still there I believe empty at
Plumptree Place) around this time Robert Smith baptised by immersion 32
people in the river Trent.. He had a long pastorate and he only left
Stoney Street due to a false accusation made by an assistant minister I
think his name was Cotton. When Robert Smith left Stoney St so all the
family members moved with him to Broad St and I guess James Smith had a hand
in the building work. Broad Street had a burial patch and around 1900
many Granger/Snith graves were moved to the General Cemetery. You must
remember in its early days Stoney St had around 400 membership and over 1000
Sunday school scholars - many at various preaching stations around
Nottingham. In fact Robert pioneered a number of the Baptist Churches
such as Front Street Arnold and others around the 1800s.
