FRIDAY 6 AUGUST 1943 William Edward Weightman passed away.A very well-known identity in the person of Mr William Edward Weightman, Of Awahuri, in his 74th year. Born in England, he arrived with his parents in N.Z in the mid 70s of last century, first settling at Woodville, and removing shortly after to Awahuri, being then a boy of 9 years of age. Mr Weightman had resided on the property originally taken up until his last illness. As a young man he was interested in athletics, being a member of the Old Awahuri Football Club and an amateur road racing cyclist. He was also a member of the Feilding Manchester Rifles. With his late father he estabished and conducted most successfully a nursey garden business, combined with fruit-growingand general horticulture, and was a most consistent prize-winner at shows throughout the Dominion. He was elected president of the Nurseymens Association of N.Z for a term. Mr Weightman subsequently engaged in farming pursuits, but eventually disposed of his prperties and took a trip to England, since when he had lived a retired life. His widow survived him, also 2 daughters of the first marriage - Mesdames W.J.Port, of Chaytor St, Palmerston North and Campbell Port, of Levin.

He then had 2 1/2 year's clerical experience in a Land & Estate office in the West End of London, and at 16 years of age came to NZ (Abt 1898). For some time he followed farming pursuits in Taranaki and in the Waikato. He then went to Australia, but soon afterwards returned to NZ, and after a short time spent with Messrs. Fanning & Co., land agents of Wellington, he, in partnership with his brother, established Messrs Reynolds E & Co. Ltd, Cycle & Motor Importers, in Wellington. After acquiring the P.N. branch and making it the Head Office in 1905, Mr Pees removed to to P.N. where he has since resided."

Born at Marton. Married Agnes Whakahina (Rene) Bartholomew (16 Dec 1891-15 July 1970). She was the seventh of ten children of Peter Bland Bartholomew (abt1845-1918), timber miller from Levin and Weraroa.
Sidney Charles trained as a teacher (and through a posting at Weraroa he met Rene). He taught at high schools in Napier and Palmerston North where he was persuaded by his brother in law Eric Pees to join his business. He went on to become Auckland manager for Eric Reynolds (similar business, importing car and cycle parts, from about 1921 until the business declined following Reynold’s death about 1938. He was forced to return to teaching, starting over again. Reputedly an excellent teacher and would have done well had he stuck to it.)
