No. 83: Bayard Edgell By MARION SARGENT BAYARD Hazlewood Edgell was born at Franklin Village on February 19, 1877, and christened the following month at St Andrew's Anglican Church, Perth.

He was the youngest of five children of Henry Edgell and his wife Charlotte Packer Gordon, who were married on April 25, 1865, at Hunters Hill, NSW.
Henry, originally from Tewkesbury, Gloucestershire, England, came to Launceston in 1872 as manager of the Liverpool, London and Globe Fire Insurance Company. He remained with the company until he retired in December 1905, after 49 years' service. He was a Launceston City Council alderman and a member of the general committee for the Tasmanian Exhibition of 1891-92.
Bayard's mother Charlotte was the daughter of Robert Cruden Gordon and his wife Sarah Birchall Pile, of Sydney. After Charlotte's death in September 1905, a drinking fountain for horses and dogs was erected in Lower Charles St in recognition of her work with the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals.
As a 14-year-old student, Bayard and his school friend Vernon Lawrence were commended for their display of mineral and geological specimens at the 1891-92 exhibition. Bayard was educated at Launceston Church Grammar School, starting there in 1886.
He was employed for two years at his father's insurance office and the Union Bank of Australia, before obtaining four years' practical farming, stud breeding and pastoral work at Strathroy, near Evandale, for Charles B. Grubb. Bayard then secured a position on a NSW property belonging to Sir Samuel McCaughey, the largest sheep owner in the world at the time. He also worked at Junalong Station, near Forbes, in NSW.
In 1903 Bayard returned to Tasmania and rented the grazing and farming property, Meander Rise, near Carrick. About 10 years later he formed a partnership with P.O. Fysh, as Fysh and Edgell. The company acquired Dennistoun, The Armitage and other properties in the Bothwell district. After the death of P.O. Fysh in 1922, H.P. Harrison and W. von Bibra bought his share.
Bayard took an active part in public affairs. He was a councillor and Warden of the Bothwell municipality; an active member of the Tasmanian Farmers, Stockowners and Orchardists' Association from its inception in 1908; a delegate to many interstate conferences; and as chairman of the State Meat Advisory Board, he instigated the export of fat lambs from Tasmania.
On October 1, 1907, Bayard Edgell married Hannah Ethel Gibson, the daughter of W.H. Gibson, of Fairfield, Epping. Their three children were born in Launceston - Geoffrey Bayard Gibson in 1908, Henry in 1910 and Ethel Ellen in 1915. Henry died in Melbourne in 1929, aged 19. He, his parents and brother, had just returned from a world tour.
Bayard's elder brother, Robert Gordon Edgell (1866-1948), founded his vegetable canning business in Bathurst, NSW, in 1926; it prospered and became a well- known Australian Company.
Henry Mordaunt Edgell (1868-1909) married Frances Estelle Barnard from Landfall and moved to Woodlands, Surprise Bay, King Island, where he farmed for six years before he died suddenly from appendicitis just a month after his father's death.
Bayard had two sisters, one of whom is also in the Family Album. It could be Theodora Grace (1870-1963) or Mabel Ellen Mamie, known as Nellie, (1872-1942) who married Wilfred Bourne Barnard in St Aiden's Church, Launceston, in 1907.
Bayard died suddenly at his home at Dennistoun on April 25, 1949, aged 72 and was buried at the Bothwell Cemetery. His wife Hannah had predeceased him on October 3, 1947.

Bayard married Hannah Ethel GIBSON [21431] [MRIN: 8524] on 01 Oct 1907, daughter of William Henry GIBSON [51686] and Hannah TAYLOR [51687]. Hannah was born on 10 Aug 1876 in Epping Sydney Colony of New South Wales and died on 30 Oct 1947 at age 71.
