4. Radulphus DE DEN [22340] (Robertus2, Robertus1) was born in 1100 in Buckhurst Manor Sussex England, died in 1165 at age 65, and was buried in 1165. Another name for Radulphus was Ralph DENE.

General Notes: Radallphus founded Ottisham Abbey in Kent. Radallphus held Land in Romney March in Kent, Buckhurst in Sussex and in the Duchy of Normandy. Robert endowed Bayham Abbey.

In July 2010, Janet Denne [the Legend] provided a Summary of the Denne's and various Abbeys with which they were associated, as follows:
Brief summary for Bayham and Ottesham Abbeys

In the Kent Genealogies it says that Ralph de Dene founded Bayham Abbey, see Cotton MSS and Monast. Anglicum, and possessed large estates in Kent and Sussex, also in Normandy. It says Robert de Den had estates in Kent and endowed Bayham Abbey.

But it is on the Old Tree [that Cath sent] that has the best information, this tree was first compiled in 1832, then corrected and added to in 1892. First thing to note is that Otteham is spelt Ottsham.
Against Ralph de Dene is written
"Founded Ottsham Abbey in Kent after removed by daughter Ela to Bayham Abbey now belonging to the Marquis of Camden. This Ralph had large estates in Kent and Sussex at Buckhurst and elsewhere, whence as believed the name of Denn Park Horsham seat of the Eversfield Family. He also possessed estates at Geyle etc in Normandy. see Charta Bayham Abbey Dorset MSS. Collins Peerage, Philpot, Hasted & also record at Knowle"

Against Ralph's son Robert de Denn is written
"Property in Kent left to him. see Charta Bayham Abbey Cotton MSS.

Against Ralph's daughter Ella or Hela or Adela who married Sir Jordon Sackville
"had estate of Geyle in Normandy left to her by her father's will also large estates in Sussex excluding Buckhurst, hence the title of Lord Buckhurst to the Dukes of Dorset see description on stone at Bayham Abbey. She founded Bayham Abbey in her widowhood, see Charta British Museum by which she gives permission to the Abbot to remove his establishment from Ottsham in Kent founded by her father Ralph to Bayham now Bayham Abbey"

According to this tree as noted above Ella is Robert de Denn's sister not daughter as stated by Slater. However Robert had two Daughters, Alice and Agnes.
"Alice endowed Bayham Abbey see Charta.
Agnes married de Icklesham see Charta Bayham Abbey, see also Charta St Lawrence Ottsham Weevers Fam ? P 318"

Seems the family were all very attached to Bayham Abbey!!!

Just to round it off I decided to search through Google to see what I could find. Nothing for Ottsham Abbey but a number of web sites for Barham Abbey, not a great deal of help, but here are some extracts from various sites, who knows what their sources were.

"Abbeys and other Ecclesiastical Houses
The two most important are Battle Abbey, the Benedictine house founded in pursuance of William the Conqueror's vow, and Bayham Abbey, a house of Premonstratensian Canons, who came here from Otham, near Hailsham, in 1208. There are considerable remains of both abbeys, which are among the notable sights of Sussex.

The following is a list of the religious houses of Sussex with an indication of the date of their foundation.
Premonstratensian Canons.
Bayham Abbey:
(1208), formerly at Otham (1180)"

"BAYHAM ABBEY
Standing on the Kent and Sussex borders, this Premonstratensian monastery was founded by Robert Thornham at the turn of the 12th century, and was one of only two houses in England coming directly under the dependency of Premontre (the mother-house in France).
When Bayham Abbey was suppressed in 1525, Henry VIII leased the estates to various dignitaries but on the accession of Elizabeth I most of the Sussex land was sold off. Subsequently, the estate passed through several hands until it was purchased by Sir John Pratt in 1714."

"The Abbey was built in the year 1200. At this period it was named Begeham, and was a building of considerable dimensions and importance. In 1526, Henry VIII granted Begeham to the magnificent Wolsey, but the neighbouring populace strengthened the hands of the abbots and enabled them to frustrate the efforts of the great Cardinal to dismantle the Abbey."

Radulphus married Sybella DE GATTON [22341], daughter of DE GATTON [86086], about 1120. Sybella was born in 1105.

Children from this marriage were:

5 F    i. Hela DE DENE [22343] was born in 1122 in Buckhurst Manor Sussex England. Another name for Hela was Ella DENN.

Hela married Sir Jordan SACVILLE [22345]. Jordan was born in 1115 in Wickham Suffolk England. Another name for Jordan was Gordon De SACKVILLE.

General Notes: Jordan [Gordon] was the Ancestor of the Dukes of Dorset.

+ 6 M    ii. Amfridus DE DEN [57403] was born in 1125 in Buckhurst Sussex England.

Amfridus married someone.

+ 7 M    iii. Robert DE DENE [22339] was born about 1130, died in 1165 aged about 35, and was buried in 1165.

Robert married Sybella [57402].
