General Notes: The Forster family
During the 19th century, the Forster family were the major landowners in the area. They lived at Southend Hall, which was located just south of the junction of Whitefoot Lane and Bromley Road. The parkland attached to the hall stretched away eastwards and was divided by Whitefoot Lane. The larger part lay to the south of the lane, whilst the smaller part to the north was divided into two. The eastern section was surrounded by thick belts of trees, except alongside Whitefoot Lane. In 1919 Mr W H Forster made a gift to the Metropolitan Borough of Lewisham of this part of his estate to become a public park and commemorate his two sons Alfred and John, both lost in the First World War. Mr Forster (MP for Bromley and later Lord Forster) went on to become Governor-General of Australia from 1920 to 1925. The park, gratefully received by the Council as much-needed open space for the new estates being built in the area at that time, was opened to the public in Lord Forster's absence by his daughter, the Hon. Mrs Lubbock, in 1922. The park was almost doubled in size to the north in 1937, following a deal between the Forster Estate Company and the London County Council.
