Charles, Elizabeth and children sailed from Liverpool on 6th November 1841 aboard the Martha Ridgeway. The ship's passenger manifest lists steerage passengers, Charles aged 32 a mechanic, Elizabeth 22, Frances aged 1 year and John 1 month.
Ridgeway, 621 ton barque, sailed from Liverpool on 6th November 1841, arrived in Nelson, 7 April 1842. Arrived at Port Nicholson, Wellington, New Zealand after having struck Barret's Reef and had seven feet of water in her hold, but all and all the voyage was without incident, passengers regarded it as a good journey and commended the Captain, Henry W Webb, for his care and consideration.
Elizabeth and infant son John were two of the 21 deaths enroute, 11 caused by dysentery. There were also 7 births on the five-month voyage. The Martha Ridgeway was later wrecked off Great Barrier Reef sometime around 11 August 1842.
The Martha Ridgeway's arrival in Nelson triggered the first distribution of "town acres" in the newly-surveyed settlement. Distribution of allotments within the Nelson township was held between 11th & 15th April 1842.
