5. Jane BISHOP [22564] (Thomas2, Unknown1) was born in 1850 in Devizes Wiltshire England and died on 07 Dec 1920 in Streatham London England at age 70.

General Notes: In a File of Information on this Bishop Family, Ivy Trott states:-

Jane was 25 when she married John Roland Trott in Bristol, where it is presumed she lived with her family. Oddly, his age is given on the birth certificate as 32 (this was on April 18, 1876). He would actually have been 39, so he halved the difference in age....

Their marriage was very short, as he died in 1881. She re-married Tom J. Couper, who must have been an army man, as they lived in army quarters. For a long time we knew only of the children Edie and Tom, and did not know if they were Thomas Couper's children by a first marriage or the children of Thomas and Jane. Being contacted by Michael Couper resolved this puzzle and introduced us to their siblings.

Jane must have been rather a splendid woman, as all references to her are positive, and she obviously brought John Rowland up to have great respect for his father. She must have been proud of having both a husband and son who were mentioned in despatches for gallantry, a step-son, Thomas, who was promoted from the ranks in the field. Sadly her grandson, Charles Weller, was killed on the first day of the Battle of Marne.

Thelma has a photograph of her grave.

At her wedding her father was noted as James Bishop, plumber. One of the witnesses was Elizabeth Woodman Bishop, and as she named her daughter Maud Woodman Trott, it can possibly be presumed that Woodman was her own mother's maiden name. The eldest daughter of Jane and John was Agnes Bishop, and Bishop was her maiden name, so it seems to be possible.

At the time of marriage John Roland's place of residence is given as Aldershot, hers as Totterdown, which is presumably in the Bedminster district of Bristol.

Jane appears in the 1851 Census HO 107/1839: fOLIO 664 PAGE 36. Address 139 High Street, but I think the 139 is the piece number, not the house number. Also in the house were her father THOMAS (NOT James as we thought from the marriage certificate) aged 38, plumber and glazier employing 6 men; Sarah, her mother, 33; daughter Elizabeth, 7; George aged 2 and Jane then 1.

By 1861 Sarah must have died, for at address 23 The High Street (here again, is 23 actually the house number or the schedule number?) are only Thomas, aged 48, Widower, employing or or 2 men, Elizabeth 17, the housekeeper, George 12 and Jane 10, scholars. All born Devizes. All parish of St. John registration place. RG9/1293 Folio 20, page 41.

Census info was supplied to me by Joan Webster who responded to my appeal on the Wiltshire rootsweb list.

Also in Devizes in the 1881 Census were William Woodman, 63, with Susanna, wife, Selina and Susanna, daughters, aged 70, 41 and 32, possibly Sarah's family? They lived at The Island.
A William Bishop, carpenter, born in Devizes and aged 53 was living in Gloucester with wife Anna 53, Albert Wm. 19, telegraph clerk, and Jessie, 10, sister and scholar. Anna born Tatesbury, Wilts, children in Gloucester.

We have a copy of Jane's birth certificate, Registration District Devizes, 1850, County of Wilts.
No. 359, born 19th February 1850, High Street, Devizes, Jane, Girl, father Thomas Bishop, mother Sarah Bishop formerly Woodman, occ. of father plumber and glazier, informant Sarah Bishop on March 23, 1850, registrar Harvey Withers. Copy issued at GRO 27th March, 2000.

On the 1881 Census there is also a Rhoda Woodman, born 1868 in Colerne, Wilts, living in New Park Street, Devizes. Shown as a Widow. Several children aged 21 down, born West Lavington, Colerne, Pewsey, Malmesbury. Also a brick layer named John Woodman, aged 54 with wife Jane and son Frank J., a coach tripper, aged 14 and daughter Ellen, all bornin Devizes, living St. James Place.

We know that Jane had a possible cousin, RACHEL who married GEORGE MOTT as we have a photograph of the couple in middle age. Also AGNES BISHOP TROTT was staying with them at the time of the 1881 Census. Sarah and George said to have married in the June qtr 1879 in Leicester, her previous name being NOYES. So who was Sophia Simpkins, mother, also recorded in 1881 census and born in Devizes? More likely Rachel's mother than George's, as he was born in Abingdon.

Jane married John Roland TROTT [22565] [MRIN: 8885] on 18 Apr 1876 in Bedminster Somerset England. John was born on 06 Oct 1837 in Broadhembury Devon England and died on 04 Jan 1881 in Bromley Kent England at age 43.
