General Notes: When Margaret was eight years old, and shortly after the birth of her Brother Eric, her Mother died, supposedly of Scarlet Fever. Margaret later established it was probably Puerperal Fever after childbirth. During Edith's (Mother) illness, Margaret and Harold were cared for by their Ward Grandparents in Sheffield and "Jack" (Arthur John) went to the Smith Grandparents at March. Following Edith's Death their Aunt Janet cared for the Children and their Father for a time. However, their Father left within a short time allowing the Children to be cared for by members of their Parents Families. Margaret was "adopted" by her Uncle Tom and Aunt "Nellie" (Eleanor), who was her Mother's Sister. Harold was cared for by the Smith Grandparents in March; and went to a Boarding School at Snettisham in Norfolk. Arthur (Jack) was cared for by the Ward Grandparents and his Uncle Arthur, who was "like a Father to him". The "Baby", Eric was adopted by a Minister of Religion on the understanding that no contact was made with him by other members of the Family. During their childhood Margaret and Jack were very close and spent considerable time at the Chesterman Family Home, "Eastwood Grange" at Ashover in Derbyshire. Margaret and Jack generally lost track of Harold. Margaret saw him when she was 18, and living at Wimbledon. He was at that time staying with his Father, although the other Children did not make contact with their Father at that time. Shortly after this, when he was 17 years old Jack left England
for Australia. Margaret saw him when he returned to England with the Australian Imperial Forces during the 1914-1918 War. Following that he returned to Australia; and they never saw each other again. Following the 1914-1918 War, all contact with Harold was lost. Margaret saw her Father again about 1926; but only from a distance. She never made contact with him again. Margaret was buried in Beeston Cemetry, in the same plot as her Mother, Edith. ... H.U.Smith. January 1988. from Margaret Currie's Memoirs. ...

Margaret married John Alban William CURRIE [3521], son of John Andrew CURRIE [4260] and Anne Lucretia WRIGGLESWORTH [4261], on Jun 5, 1919 in Waldron, Sussex. ... John was born on Jun 18, 1883 in Sheffield Yorkshire England and died on Jan 9, 1973 in West Bridgford Nottingham Nottinghamshire England at age 89.

General Notes: Engineer and draughtsman. Served engineering app- renticeship at John Brown's of Clydeside. Works Manager at William Cook's (wire rope) of Sheffield On marriage to Margaret, lived in farmhouse at Dore, Derbyshire, commuting to Sheffield by train. Moved to London to start his own engineering busi- ness
(Automatic Controls) in 1927, worked for Min- istry of Supply during WW2 and served in Home Guard. Lived in Harrow. See Notes under Margaret Currie (Ulph-Smith) for details of "Jack's" early childhood. Jack attended King Edward VII College, Sheffield. Following that he worked as a Junior Clerk at Hadfields Steel Foundry in Sheffield during the latter half of 1911. Following that it is believed he was employed as an Apprentice Fitter (possibly for the same Company) until 1914. When he was just over 17 years old, on March 19, 1914, he left England for Australia on the P.& O. 11,000 ton T.S.S.BELTANA. On arrival in Australia he apparently made his way to the Northern Rivers of N.S.W. where he worked for a time "on the Roads". He subsequently trained as and was employed as a Herd-tester, testing Dairy Herds for Milk and Cream quality. On August 20, 1915 he enlisted from Brisbane in the 47th Battalion, Australian Imperial Forces AIF A photograph of Jack taken sometime during WWI states he was in the 13/15th Rifles. Who or what that Battalion was is at present unknown. Following Service in Egypt and France, he was discharged, as a Corporal, Medically unfit, as a result of "Trench Feet" acquired in the Trenches of France. On his return to Australia, he was given a Government Land Grant, which proved to be an un-workable swamp. He abandoned this; and was employed for a time in various Government Driving jobs in Brisbane. He was subsequently employed as a Sales Representative in the Printing Industry. During the course of his employment with the Howard Printing Works, at Graham St., South Brisbane he married "the Daughter of the Boss", Lucy Howard. He later worked for Simpson Halligan & Co., in the same capacity, where he was employed for a total of about 21 years. From late 1946 he was the Proprietor of both a Boarding House, and a General Store at Southport, South of Brisbane. Neither of these were exceptionally successful and he returned to Brisbane again as a Printer's Rep- resentative with Watson Ferguson. In 1949 he again left Brisbane, purchasing a Pineapple Farm at Montville, on the Ranges to the North of Brisbane. After about 8 years he returned to Brisbane to again work for Simpson Halligan as a Printer's Rep During this time, as a result of being a constant heavy Smoker, aggravated (probably) by the use of Pesticides and Weedicides on the Farm he was constantly ill, suffering from a form of Anaemia and Emphysema. When they were married, Jack and "Luce" made their (New) Home at Sandgate Road, Nundah, at the top of "Buck's Hill". They lived here until they bought the Boarding House, "Rowallen", The Esplanade, Southport. From there they purchased the "Tropical Cafe", Brighton Parade, Southport. From Southport they returned to Brisbane to live at Oxlade Drive, New Farm. They then moved to the "Farm" at Flaxton Road, Montville. Following their final return to Brisbane they lived firstly at 46 Speight Street, Brighton; and finally at 52 Lovegrove Street, Zillmere. ... "Jack" was always a genuine "Gentleman". He was completely honest and above-board; and always had the respect of his associates. He was always willing to carry a part of the load of whatever Social Activity in which he was involved. He was firstly Secretary of his Football Club, "Brisbane City" about the mid 20's. He was subsequently Secretary of Robert McGavin Masonic Lodge, Vulture St., South Brisbane, of which he was a member for many years also serving as Worpshipful Master. He was also a member of the Grand Lodge (Masonic) of Queensland where he served as Sword Bearer. As a result of changing fortune (the financial difficulty of running a Pineapple Farm) he retired from his association with the Masonic lodge, although he was well enough thought of for the Members to offer to defer his fees. During the 1939-45 War he tried to enlist; but was rejected due to his age and prior disability. However, he did serve with the Auxilliary Fire Service, mostly practising hosing "the bush" around Nundah; and "pumping out" the odd Air Raid Shelter. During his time as a Pineapple Farmer he was active with the Montville Pineapple Farmers Association; and the Committee of Direction of Fruit Marketing. As well as being the "Gentleman" mentioned above, he was kind and tolerant and a loving Father and Grand-father. ...
H.U.Smith. January 1988.

In a Letter, dated November 17, 1938, Janet Clara Stanger-Smith wrote to A.J.U.Smith after a long period of no contact, part of which said:
"I should have known a lot more about you, how the first arrangements materialized for you and not Harold to live with the March Grandpapa [John Stanger Smith and Emma Ulph]. I wish I knew where Harold is - does anybody know? It seems so sad to have lost sight of him so completely. I don't even know if he came through the War all right. Did you see him at all during the War? Poor Harold, he had a rather bad Legacy of nerves. His health much improved in March [The Township or Village] with the open air live. Alas! he lacked strength of will & I always think that was due to Minnie's drastic treatment at Beeston. As soon as I went for a short time to keep house there, I got rid of her - her influence was not good.
You were then such a jolly little boy. I was loth to part with you when Sheffield [the Chesterman Family?] claimed you; but it had to be & you had more opportunities than ever March would have furnished."

General Notes: From the "Cross and Cockade" Journal, a society for WW1 aviation enthusiasts, written by Rex Harrison:

MAJOR BASIL BINYON, RNAS &RAF, OBE, MA, CEng, FIEE, FIEEE, AFRAeS

Born on 23 April 1885 in Ipswich, the only son of Brightwen Binyon, an architect and painter 1852-1905, and a distant relative of the poet Laurence Binyon, he was educated at Bootham School, York, and Leighton Park School, Reading, both of which where Quaker schools. He then went to Trinity college, Cambridge in 1904, where he rowed as an undergraduate in the college boat, and graduated BA in 1907 having obtained second honours in Part One of the Natural Sciences Tripos. He began work with the Cambridge Scientific Instrument Company, and in 1909 joined Marconi for work on trans-Atlantic morse transmissions at Poldhu, Cornwall. From his RAF service documents held in the PRO at Kew, we learn that from 1910 to 1911 he was employed as a research engineer with Cie General Radiole Telegraphique in Paris, and from 1911 until September 1914as General Manager of the Anglo-French Wireless Company of London and Paris. Basil Binyon joined the RNVR as a Lieutenant on 22 Sept 1914,on the books of HMS Pembroke, additional for RNAS, where his wireless telegraphy expertise was employed for the war effort at Eastchurch. At that station he was working with Lieutenant D.R. Hyde-Thompson RN, who had been responsible for the first torpedo-dropping experiments, on Southampton Water, and Flight Sub Lieutenant M.B. Tomlinson RN
The War in the Air, by H.A. Jones, Vol. 2 mentions that Lt B.Binyon RNVA, a Naval Air Service Wireless Officer at Eastchurch had, in October 1914, designed a wireless set that was first made by the Sterling Telephone Company, and that two sets were taken out to the Dardanelles by HMS Ark Royal. (These sets were in fact not used to their full potential due to the spotters having insufficient experience in wireless telegraphy.)
On 12 March 1915, Basil Binyon became Flight Lieutenant (temporary) at Eastchurch for Wireless/Telegraphy duties and, turning once again to H.A, Jones, we find that he was the first aeroplane observer to test gun spotting by use of wireless. An old battleship, the Revenge, was ordered to Shoeburyness in April 1915 for firing trials in co-operation with aircraft from Eastchurch, and seaplanes from the Empress, and the Isle of Grain. On the first and second days the Eastchurch aeroplane carrying Binyon had the only success, which was all the more noteworthy as he had had no previous experience of gun spotting. For the first time in Naval history a battleship commander had had his fire controlled by communication with an air observer with remarkable accuracy, when neither were visible to each other. These events created great interest at the Admiralty, and both Winston Churchill, then First Lord of the Admiralty, and Admiral Lord 'Jackie' Fisher, then First Sea Lord, were said to be favourably impressed. Further wireless experiments were carried out in August 1915 at Eastchurch when Binyon was piloted by FI/Sub/Lt J.B.D. Boyd in BE2c tractor biplane No 1124. During 1915 Eastchurch was involved with at least three enemy air raids on England's East Coast which no doubt were a welcome diversion to the day to day routine. In February 1916 he went over to France with Lt Tomlinson to see how the French were progressing in wireless telegraphy, and reported back with much valuable information. Due to the rapidly growing needs of the RNAS, the Eastchurch wireless experimental station moved to Cranwell in May 1916, and Basil Binyon moved with it in charge of the wireless telegraphy school, which was situated in the Eastern half of the air station. His first service Confidential report is dated 18 January 1916, at Eastchurch, and states: "Has no experience of command or disciplinary duties. Expert in W/T in all its branches, and VGI as lecturer on W/T. Very good spotter". The RNAS training station at Cranwell in Lincolnshire was named HMS Daedalus after the usual Royal Navy system of giving the names of the ships to its shore bases (to be strictly correct it was borne on the books of HMS Daedalus). It was one of a number of flat areas of ground which the Admiralty acquired during the Great War for the use of aircraft for reconnaissance purposes. Admiralty memorandum No 14 of 24 February 1916 stated that 'all officers and men under instruction in aeroplanes, kite balloons and airships will be sent to Cranwell for a finishing course, and for graduation'. His first confidential report from the Commodore at Cranwell reads: "In charge of all W/T, W/T boys and electrical ratings under instruction, also experimental and research work. Has carried out duties most satisfactorily, is a good organiser, very capable and hard working", dated 6 November 1916. On 13 November 1916 it was put forward that he be granted the acting rank of Flight Commander, which he became on 14 November 1916. A further report .)f 26 November 1916 reads: "Very strongly recommended for promotion", and he was subsequently made Flight Commander with effect from 31 December 1916, with seniority from the same date. Apparently not content with his ground duties, Basil Binyon trained as a pilot, and was awarded Royal Aero Certificate No 4587 on 14 April 1917, at Cranwell, having taken his test on a Maurice Farman biplane, presumably a Shorthorn, as this was the usual training aircraft at that time. His service record dated 26 March 1918, shows that lie had flown 33 hours, of which 23 hours and 22 minutes were solo flying. The confidential report of 29 November 1917 by LtCol A. Warrington-Morris states "Recommended for promotion", and the same gentleman recommended him for the award of the OBE, which was gazetted on 7 June 1918 to Major Basil Binyon, Royal Air Force. Although there is no citation in the London Gazette, tlie award was for his war work on radio telegraphy from aircraft. Prior to the award he had been promoted in the New Year's Honour list of 3 January 1918 to Acting Squadron Commander, a rank which he held until the amalgamation of the RNAS and RFC on I April 1918. In the special qualifications section of his RAF service record, under authority, Census/365, are the notes: BA degree Cambridge, Natural Science Tripos. Post Graduate course in Electrical Engineering, seven months in engineering workshops, AMIEE, MIRE. Since joining RNAS three and a half years, officer in charge of all W/T research and experimental work. Graduated as a pilot (for aeroplanes). He remained at Cranwell with the Wireless Experimental Establishment, until being transferred to the unemployment list 21 March 1919. He returned to Cambridge University to complete his MA, and then formed-the Radio Communication Company in Barnes, making long wave marine transmitting and receiving equipment of international repute: was bought out by Marconi, and joined the board of that company. By Strange Coincidence, the Present GEC-Marconi site at Stanmore is known as 'The Grove', after the mansion which formerly stood there, and the architect of that building was Brightwen Binyon, Basil's father.
Following a meeting of wireless manufacturers called by the Postmaster General in 1922, it was decided that a single company would best serve the new medium of radio broadcasting, and the British Broadcasting Company was thus formed. Earlier that year the Marconi company had already begun experimental transmissions from Writtle, and prior to the formation of the new company there had been many difficult meetings between the Post Office and private companies on how broadcasting should be organised. Agreement was reached at the meeting at Savoy Place on 18 October 1922, the result being the birth of2LO.
Basil Binyon was appointed an original director of the British Broadcasting Company, serving until 1926 when he resigned after a disagreement with Lord Reith, the managing director, regarding the changeover from private enterprise company into a public corporation, now known worldwide as the BBC. He returned t Marconi until 1935, being periodically released for visits to the Argentine to supervise the Buenos Aires Water Company. He was chairman of the Institute of Electrical Engineers in 1925. During WW2 he was Group Commandant of No 19 Group Royal Observer Corps, and from 1939 to 1947 was an Observer Commander. He died on 4 April 1977, aged 91, at Farnborough, Kent, after a full and active life, having been a pioneer of radio broadcasting, whose contribution to this medium should not be forgotten.

From the Kentish Times, Friday December 28, 1962:
Hawthorndene, former home of Major Basil Binyon, in Warren Road, Hayes, was severely damaged by fire on Friday. Firemen from Bromley and West Wickham spent nearly three hours extinguishing the blaze and damping down the fabric. Extensive damage was caused to the upper floor and the roof of the house, which contains 20 rooms and has been empty for some time. The site is to be redeveloped. It is believed the fire may have been started by children playing inside the house

General Notes: In an email dated February 19, 2003, Sylvia Robertson said:-

Peter NICHOLLS is a sculptor. His sculptures are usually constructed from large pieces of timber combined with heavy chains and cable. This, he says, is creating an interplay between tensional and compressive forces.

He was one of 11 scuptors selected to be the sole NZ rep. at an arts festival to be staged to complement the Commonwealth Games at Edmonton, Canada in August 1978. His sculpture will be a permanent fixture in an Edmonton city park called "Pump Structure" and will make use of large pieces of wood and steel, and will symbolise the drawing of life from the earth. Also been represented in several international sculptural exhibitions in Australia.

Unable to make a living from sculpture, Peter taught art at various Auckland secondary schools, the last one being Takapuna Grammar. 1990 - tutors in sculpture at the Otago Polytechnic School of Art, Dunedin.

He was one of the leading NZ sculptors invited by the Auckland City Art Gallery to participate in a major sculptural exhibition there in 1986 - "Spine".
In 1984 the Dunedin Public Art Gallery organised a retrospective of his work.

One of his sculptures measures 30' x 6' - stands on a hillside at Kerikeri - called "Suspension"

In 1979 was a visiting lecturer in sculpture at the University of Wisconsin.

Married at St Aidans, Remuera, Auckland, to Dianne Ffrench in 1964 by Canon Lionel Beere who got up from his sick bed to do so - then back to bed! (Canon Beere possibly a relative). Di died in 1999 aged 52.

Dianne was born in 1946 in Melbourne VIC Australia, died on May 25, 1999 in Dunedin Otago New Zealand at age 53, and was buried in Waitati Cemetery Dunedin Otago New Zealand.

General Notes: In an email dated February 19, 2003, Sylvia Robertson said:-

Di has introduced the old Irish double FF into her name which had been dropped.

Dianne is also a sculptor, and photographer. Trustbank Canterbury Artist in Residence for 1990, Di also has a background in academic study, sculpture and performance art. I've broken all the rules of photography she says, in her search for a heightened metaphor through which to transfer idea into image.

In a complex process she first photographs the figure or subject, incorporates it in a mock-up with other material such as small sculptures, drawings, historical or architectural emblems and records it on a slide transparency. This is then projected onto a specially constructed surface to be rephotographed. And Di FFRENCH's surface is no ordinary surface. Within an oblong wooden box are spread layers of burnt coke, ash, coal and dried leaves, sometimes sprinkled with powdered colour tempera. This gives the final print irradiating points of carbon-light, limited colour and touches of marble-like texture.

297. Anthony Armitage BISHOP [3056] (Spencer Armitage George173, Charles Edward (Rev.)72, George16, William1) was born on Mar 13, 1931 in Melton Mowbray Leicestershire England and died in 2017 in Perranporth Cornwall England at age 86.

General Notes: I was born in the War Memorial Hospital at Melton Mowbray on Friday 13th March 1931, and my Mother was soon diagnosed as having cancer of the gallbladder, and she was dead by August. It was a merciful release, because she had been out of her mind with pain for the last two months. Her body lies in Thorpe Rd Cemetery Melton Mowbray. After my Mother's death, a nurse looked after me for a while until my Aunt Clare (my father's youngest sister) came to keep house for us.
When I was considered old enough I had a governess (Miss Hodgetts). I took great joy in plaiting her hair, which reached nearly to her waist. One maid I remember well was Ella Plowman, the daughter of my father's patients at Asfordby, she and I were great pals. Two other pals were the 2 Sealyhams (dogs) Pogo & Trixi, whose portraits still hang in my son Philip's home. Pogo eventually went blind, we had to keep furniture in the same position or he would collide with it. When he was younger he always kept guard under my cot, you could only approach if he approved.
Later I was sent to the junior house at Oakham School, under a giant of a housemaster, Mr Milligan, he was 6ft 7". I can still remember my father coming to school to see me swim my first length of the school outdoor baths. It was at Oakham that I first heard bagpipes. What a glorious sound as the piper practised in the school playing field across the lane. I forget now why, but I was not very happy there, may be because I was disobedient & often got the cane! I tried another school Trent College at Long Eaton. To my Father's disappointment I was no sportsman except at Rugby, where I had to play in the same position my father held in Liverpool University team, hooker. I joined the Officer Training Corps, & enjoyed rifle shooting. Another pastime was naming trees. Trent College has over 400 different varieties of trees & shrubs. I got up to 250 names and then ran into trouble when there were only Latin names left! As today, I was fond of singing in the choir. I was fortunate to be at school with boys who had been head choristers in Kings College Cambridge, St Georges Windsor, St Paul's Cathedral London, & Chester Cathedral. What a choir! I sat the Oxford & Cambridge Certificate (the equivalent of the CSE), passing History Chemistry Physics Maths & Metal Work & amazed everyone by getting credits in both English Literature & Language, because I am still hopeless at spelling today.
When I left school I went as a farm pupil to Mr Charles Whalley at Top Farm Bearston Nr Market Drayton in Shropshire. This farm carried the large Verona pedigree Friesian dairy herd. When my Father retired I moved down to Altarnun near Launceston in Cornwall. There I looked after an Ayrshire dairy herd until they had to be sold due to the owner's bad health. This time I moved to Coswarth Farm just outside Newquay further west in Cornwall, a completely different farm with a lot of arable land with some cattle and a large flock of sheep. My last move was to join the Eustice family at Trethiggey Farm, also nr Newquay, which had mostly South Devon cattle. I well remember Ron Eustice, who was disabled, going in between two bulls who were fighting with a horse whip to part them, a thing I would not have dared to do, and yet none of them would go near a cow which had new born twins, except on a tractor. They were amazed when I went into the field, put one calf across my shoulders and drove the cow & other calf in with no trouble at all.
After this I decided to spread my wings, and volunteered to join the R A F. I had several bouts of tonsillitis, which culminated in Rheumatic fever, which meant a month in R.A.F. Hospital Ely, followed by several months on light duties before returning to square bashing. On completing this I studied Ground Radar as a mechanic. When I eventually mastered that, at the second attempt I was posted to RAF Trerew Nr Newquay, back in Cornwall. Whilst I was there I ran the coffee swindle, and went down to Trerew Farm for some milk, where I met Betty Pascoe who became my wife.
I finished my term in the forces and went to work for my brother in law at Trevornick nr Cubert, living in a rented cottage Nr Zelah. I was on the lookout for a farm of my own; presently a chance came up at Marazanvose, just the other side of Zelah. It was only 38 1/2 acres, and I tried a bit of everything, but eventually settled on Friesian cows, rearing what heifers I could. When my Landlord died I was offered the chance to buy the farm. My brother in law lent me cash and a few years later I sold that farm and bought a larger one at Hendra Nr Rose, between Cubert and Perranporth. Later I bought an adjoining farm bringing my acreage up to 145. I was able to rear all my heifers and grow corn to help feed them.
My sons Michael and Philip were both born whilst we were at Marazanvose. Michael did not want to follow me in farming; he worked at Ladbrokes holiday camp Nr Perranporth (now called Haven Holidays), and ran their fish and chip shop. So I decided to sell the farm and buy the Grantham Astor Hotel, a decision I have never regretted.
We moved in November 1972,and opened for Christmas. Michael went to Camborne catering college for that winter and I joined him until I had to return to see to bookings after Christmas. At that time only 4 bedrooms were en suite. We added 6 folding showers and opened again in April 1973, using Smiths Happiways coaches.(I had purchased the hotel from Smiths). The following winter we amalgamated the bar and ballroom to make the highland ballroom. We also had to dig a cellar, as during our first dinner function, I remember us rolling a barrel of beer through the dinning room. Michael and I dug the cellar BY HAND. It soon proved too small so was doubled in size. It has more recently been doubled yet again, to accommodate real ale. There have been constant improvements, including the purchase of the Gables next door, which was joined into the hotel. The first Christmas that those rooms were used, the guests had to be issued with umbrellas and walk around from one front door to the other as we not allowed to knock through in time.
The old Grantham Astor (once two properties) had 54 bedrooms. The number has varied up and down since, as en suite facilities have been provided, and ground floor rooms built. The constant policy of improvement continues, including skittle alleys and the complete rebuilding of the wing behind the Gables. We finally retired in 1987; to live in Perranporth where we still welcome friends we have made over the years.
I mentioned our Highland ballroom, which has surprised many guests. "Why Scotland in Cornwall?" I have heard many times. Well I have always been proud of my Scottish ancestry, and when I was married the second time to Eileen Lewis (a guest) it was in the Forbes kilt. I always wore it to run "party night". Philip and I both wear Forbes kilts on Christmas night in the hotel now. (Philip's is the dress tartan and mine is the day one.)

Are we entitled to wear them? Well that depends on your point of view. My grand mother was Henrietta Octavia Robinson, and her mother was Henrietta Cecilia Forbes, so the blood flows through the female line twice, but surely we live in an age of sex equality Ha! Ha! Quite apart from that, all families could not exist, but for the ladies.
My second wife Eileen, who contributed a lot to the early establishment of the Grantham Astor Hotel, and I live quietly at Perranporth about 7 miles west of Newquay. We both do a bit of charity work; I have a garden to tend, am involved in our local church and spend a lot of time tracing our roots! By the time I have finished, I hope there will not be much left to do to complete our story, but I recommend, family history to anyone in retirement. It is fascinating, but you need plenty of patience!

Childhood Memoirs - Eileen Norman
My Father was Edward John Norman, one of seven Boys and two Girls, born to Eliza and Charles Norman, living at 2 Morfa Terrace, Landore, Swansea.
My earliest Memories are of the tiny House we live in, in Jockey Street, Swansea, with my Mother's Parents. Her Father, Michael Sheehan, had come over from a Farm near Cork in Ireland; but he died when I was only 3 Years old.
As a child it was always a special treat for me to be taken on a visit to my other Grandmother's Corner Shop near the Landore Cinema. She would allow me to stand behind the Counter and help her serve [the Customers]. Then she would teach me to count out the Change.
People would rush out of the Cinema during the interval, to buy sweets, chocolates, bottles of pop and 2p [tupenny] packets of 5 Woodbine Cigarettes! The open packets of cigarettes were kept in the same drawer as the money. I remember my hands smelling of Cigarettes! When I grew up I couldn't bear to smoke Cigarettes!
Aunty Fan, my Father's Sister, married to Uncle Peter Foley, kept house there and looked after her Parents all their lives. She had one Son, Edward and also looked after my Cousin Harold Norman whose Mother had unfortunately died young, and his Father, Uncle George.
I think lots of People will remember the picnics and charabanc trips, which Auntie Fan organized for youngsters in the neighbourhood. We went singing happily around the countryside.
The middle room behind the Shop contained two pianos where Aubrey, the second Son of Uncle Ben Norman, used to teach children to play the Piano. He gave up on me! His main occupation was Pianist at the Elysium Cinema in the Days of Silent Films.
