General Notes: In an eMail from John Cunningham in August 2007, he said:
Thomas was a yachtsman and raced his 5ton yacht Surprise on the Thames. He won a couple of silver cups as prizes. There were reports in the Times of one or two of the races.

Medical Notes: The eminent Surgeon, Dr. James Wilkinson, of Melbourne has assisted with details of Hydrothorax. He has elaborated as follows:
Hydrothorax is an old term meaning "water in the chest". It refers to the accumulation of fluid around one lung - now called "Pleural Effusion". Sometimes this can become infected, but even if not the fluid encroaches on the lung on the affected side so that the lung cannot inflate properly. In some instances the effusion (hydrothorax) can be on both sides, which is obviously bad! The cause varies - can be related to heart failure, pneumonia and other causes.
