9. Annie Violetta BENSON [42043] (John Henry2, John1) was born about 1876 in Leicester Leicestershire England, died on 17 Jun 1964 in Auckland Auckland New Zealand aged about 88, and was buried in Jun 1964 in Waikumete Cemetery Auckland New Zealand.

Annie married James Richard Phillips STANGER [41728], son of Alfred White STANGER [41536] and Frances [Fanny] PHILIPS [41721], in 1896 in Leicester Leicestershire England. James was born on 15 Oct 1870 in Caldecott Rutland England, was baptised on 4 Jun 1871 in Independent Chapel Caldecott Rutland England, died on 6 Apr 1946 in Avondale Auckland New Zealand at age 75, and was buried on 9 Apr 1946 in Waikumete Auckland New Zealand.

General Notes: James died in NZ 6 April 1946 at 237 Blockhouse Bay Road, Avondale. NZ
He had lived in NZ 19 years, aged 76. On death certificate it mentioned son age 40 and daughters 37 and 41.
He had been a retired soldier.....a private in the Durham Light Infantry at the beginning of the Boer War. He was awarded a medal the Queens South Africa..engagements were Laings Nek..Transvaal..Relief of Ladysmith..Tugela Heights.
In a File of Information on his Life, received from Maureen [Duggan] Stanger in September 2013, she included the following:
James Richard Phillips STANGER enlisted in the army on 22nd May 1888, he was 18 years 3 months. His height 5'7"; weight 132 lbs; chest 34"; he had eyes of blue and brown hair. His occupation stated as groom. His rank, a private in the Durham Light Infantry. He was promote to 1st grade Private in May 1890, then one year later to Lance Corporal. In August 1891 his rank changed back to Private while serving in the East Indies, arriving in India on 24th March 1891 and returning home in January 1896.
After retuning from the East Indies in 1896, he married Annie Violetta. Their first child, Violetta Frances Elizabeth STANGER was born the following year.
He remained in Army Service 'at home' from 1896 to 1899. On 9th October 1899 he was recalled, and deployed to South Africa a month later. Returning to England in May 1901 he was discharged on termination of engagement and granted a war gratuity of was awarded the Queens South Africa Medal with 4 clasps for engagements Laings Nek; Transvaal; Relief of Ladysmith; Tugela Heights.
In April 1915 he enlisted into the No3 Supernumerary Company, 4th Battalion Leicestershire Regiment, remaining 'at home' from April to December 1915. In December 1915 details given on his Descriptive Report on Enlistment give his age as 45yrs; height 5'8"; weight 12st 7lb; chest 42" expanded (expansion of 2½"). At this stage also of note he has tattoos on both forearms and a small mole on the bottom of his back.
In January 1916 he was posted to the 11th Leicestershire Pioneer Regiment in the rank of Private, then in March 1916 he was with the 12th Leicestershire Regiment as Acting Sergeant. 9th October 1916 James Richard Phillips STANGER, was discharged being medically unfit for service. He suffered Sciatica, the cause listed "being wet most days". He was awarded the Silver War for Sickness.

• Emigration: with his Family on the Shaw Savill & Albion Vessel, SS Ionic, bound for Wellington, NZ, 24 Jul 1924, Southampton Hampshire England.

+ 12 F    i. Violetta Frances Elizabeth STANGER [42044] was born on 1 Feb 1897 in Leicester Leicestershire England and died on 1 Feb 1932 in Wanganui New Zealand at age 35.

   13 F    ii. Ivy STANGER [42045] was born in Dec 1903 in Coalville Leicestershire England and died on 30 Oct 1968 in Auckland Auckland New Zealand at age 64.
