5. Capt. Gerald Butler BEERE

Born in Ireland, son of a prebendary of Limerick Cathedral.

Soldier & Civil Engineer.

Married Matilda Sophia WRIGHT (nee BRADY) about 1862. The family sailedto NZ on the 'Helvellyn' arriving Auckland on 16/11/1863.

Came to NZ in 1863 with Daniel, his brother.

Was appointed Captain of the 4th Waikato Militia. He found work as anengineer and built Beresfort (from which the district Beerescourt tookits name). His career took him from Hamilton in 1880. -

First child born in Auckland 1864. Had 8 children.
Lived in Devonport in 1893.
Died in Auckland in 1914.

7. George Armstrong BEERE

George came out to NZ on the 'Shalimar' with Holroyd BEERE arriving inAuckland on 20 December 1862.

Surveyor.

Four days later, George Armstrong BEERE married Georgina Emily ARMSTRONGhis cousin, on 24 December 1862 in Auckland, NZ (67/197).

Lived at Carnarvon St, Gisborne.

Makaraka Cemetery, Gisborne:
"In Loving Memory of Georgina Emily BEERE, died 5 June 1914 aged 71 yrs;George Armstrong BEERE, died 27 March 1915 aged 77 yrs."

Mary BREWER

Came to NZ about 1854 when she was 8 yrs, and used to say she had to hidein the bush from a Maori war party.

She was apparently a strong-minded woman who did not approve of her son,Douglas, marrying in England.

She settled in Whangarei which, in 1920, was a safe distance fromWellington.
