Held up my hankerchief as long as the departing tender was visible - then went down to my cabin feeling very alone and spent the first few minutes in earnest prayer for her and for them that we might meet again soon better and stronger - more fit for the Master's service."
Voyage Australia to England - 19th April 1890 aboard The Austral:-
Diary survives (writing difficult) but first paragraph reads:
"Saturday 19th April - Today accompanied by Lizzie started to the Austral at 11.30 from Petersham - leaving a very happy couple (in a very pleasant little home) who had been particularly kind and had successfully attempted to make me as happy as it was possible I could be, away from my own home."
According to Ernest Herbert's reminiscences "my father paid a visit to Australia where he saw my brothers Harry and Fred, also Mrs Harry Rickards….Coming home through the Red Sea my father appeared to get a touch of the sun and was never quite the same afterwards".

Thomas was born on 4 Jan 1834 in Hull Yorkshire England, died on 15 Jun 1912 in St Leonards-on-Sea Sussex England at age 78, and was buried in New Cemetery Sidcup Kent England.
