General Notes: Recorder of Birth's Deaths and Marriages of the Yonge Street Friends.c.1800
Amos was a carpenter, but like most craftsman of the period, farmed on the side. They moved shortly after their marriage to Catawissa, on the upper Susquanna River. They did not remain there long as the area was not fertile. They joined a number of other Quakers from Catawissa and the neighbouring Muncy Monthly Meeting and moved to Upper Canada in May 1804. They purchased 100 acres of land ( west half, Lot 92, Conc. 1 Whitchurch Twp) in Oct of that year.

Both Amos and Martha were appointed Overseers in 1805, and later became Elders as well. Amos also became the Clerk of the business meetings of both the Yonge Street Monthly Meeting and the Canada Half Year Meeting of which it was a part.

--Other Fields
Religion: West Half, Lot 92, Conc 1 Whitchurch Township, Oct 1804
History: Tuesday, Sept 30 , 1806 Timothy Rogers and Amos Armitage were appointed to wait upon the governor to present his address.
History: Amos and Martha moved from Bucks Co, PA to the area of the Maiden Creek meeting in central PA sometime before November 5, 1792 when Buckingham meeting granted them a certificate of removal, they having already "settled within your area". They were not received on certificate at Maiden Creek until May 26, 1794, however, probably because they located in the remote Roaring Creek area. In 1802, Amos succeeded as clerk of the Roaring Creek Preparatory meeting, which was subordinate to the Catawissa Monthly Meeting.
History: In 1804, on October 15th, Amos acquired 100 acres on Lot 92 of Concession 1 in Whitchurch township, York Co., Ontario. On November 22nd, he witnessed a wedding at the Yonge Street meeting, north of Toronto. It was probably at this time that he wrote to his friend, Charles Chapman, at Catawissa, "I hope by this time thou hast got rid of they property on that barren mountain and art making ready to come to a land as it were flowing with milk and honey". He resigned as overseer at Roaring Creek on December 12, 1804 and moved the family during the sleighing season of January-February, 1805. On February 6th, the family was received at Pelham meeting in the Niagara area and by February 21st, he was appointed Recorder of Marriages at the Yonge Street Preparatory meeting. He petitioned the government for 200 (prob. additional) acres in June and was approved.
History: In 1805 (Oct/Nov) he was involved with the repair of the old log meeting house and on December 19th was appointed, with Nathaniel Rogers, to contract for a burying ground. Finding it "needful" to raise 21 pounds to purchase the land, Amos was appointed treasurer and eventually one of the trustees of the land (in June, 1807), receiving the deed in March, 1810.
History: When the Yonge meeting achieved monthly status in September of 1806, an interim clerk (Nathaniel Pearson) was chosen. At the same meeting, Amos and Timothy Rogers were appointed to present an address to the Lt.Governor of Upper Canada, which they did and brought back a written reply on October 16th. Both the address and reply were printed in the Upper Canada Gazette on October 4, 1806.
History: At the meeting of October 16th, Amos was appointed the first permanent clerk of the Yonge Street Monthly Meeting. The following year, without reimbursement for personal funds used to maintain the meeting house, he resigned as clerk on October 15th. The next month, he was reimbursed over 5 pounds. When the new meeting house was planned, in the autumn of 1808, he was part of the committee to "carry on the work". He was clerk again from December, 1808 till June, 1809 and attended the Canada Half-Yearly meeting in January of 1810.
History: Taking part in the 1812 separation from the Yonge meeting by David Willson, he returned in 1816. When Phoebe Roberts and other ministers from Pennsylvania visited the area in 1821, they were hosted by Amos and Martha before their unsuccessful attempt to heal the separation. In 1824, another traveling minister mentioned both Amos and Martha as among the five elders at the Yonge meeting.
History: The Hicksite separation of 1828 finally severed the relationship of Amos and Martha from the Yonge Street orthodox Friends forever. Both of them continued in service as clerk and representatives of the Preparatory meeting of Hicksites. Amos purchased the minute book in 1832 and became clerk in 1833. Handwriting style in the book changes when his absence is noted, so it may be he was involved in the recording of minutes as well. Both were representatives to monthly and half-yearly meetings consistently between 1828 and 1841. Both are buried in the Hicksite cemetery at Yonge Street.

Served in the Cumberland County Militia
On the tax records of Huntingdon Co., PA, John Armitage and brother Benjamin Armitage are not listed as a Property Holder until after the death of their father. On the U.S. Census of 1790, the families are enumerated together, one right after the other.
John Armitage preceded his father to Cumberland Co., PA, to search out and take possession of the Warranted lands his father accumulated.
In 1780 through 1781, John Armitage served in the Cumberland Co., PA Militia. That he was a young man can be deduced from the fact that his rating was "7th Class".
By 1783, James Armitage had come to what was then Huntingdon Twp., Bedford Co., PA with the rest of the family and now were all together once again.
Received one fourth of his fathers estate upon his death. On November 18, 1806, he sold his share of lands to John Gloninger, Esq. of Daughlin Co., PA receiving 1,500.00 pounds for both his and his brother Benjamin Armitage. John Armitage along with his brother Benjamin, journeyed westward to Indiana Co., PA.
On June 3, 1807, John Armitage bought 179.16 acres of land from Alexander Moorhead, in Center Township, Indiana Co., PA. The price he paid was $745.00.
In 1807, he appears on the Tax List of Center Twp., Indiana Co., PA as a farmer. The Tax Records in the Assessor's Office in Indiana Co. Court House, begin with the year 1811. The name of John Armitage appears for only the 1811 and 1812, and then no more records appear. No other Armitage records appear in the early years.
On June 25, 1810, John Armitage sold his land in Center Twp., Indiana Co., PA to his eldest son, William Armitage, also of the same County for $800.00.
John Armitage did not leave a Will.
William Armitage (son of John Armitage) of Indiana Co., PA purchased his father's land in Center Twp., Indiana Co., PA on June 25, 1810, for $800.00.
His father did not leave a Will.
Finally, on September 20, 1814, John Armitage, agent and attorney in fact for William Armitage of the State of Kentucky, sold the property to John Agey for the sum of $700.00. From the Deed of John Armitage to John Agey,
written on September 23, 1814, it states that John Armitage is of Indiana Co., PA. Moreover, John Armitage appeared in person to verify the deed. And this is the end of the trail for the search for John Armitage. Did he stay in Indiana Co., PA with one of his children? If so, why were there no Armitage's on the U.S. Census of Indiana Co., PA for 1820. Perhaps he joined his son William Armitage in KY but there are no records which show he was there.
