29. James Nenon CONNOR [101229] (Capt., Nenon Alexander CONNOR7, Margaretta ARMSTRONG2, Nenon, Royal Irish Artillery (Lieut.)1) was born circa 1835 in Brislington Somerset England and died in 1897 in Mutford Suffolk England at age 62.

General Notes: In a Document received from Roasmund [Bryn] Anthony in August 2013, she included:
James Nenon Connor was a soldier with the 87th (Royal Irish Fusiliers) Regiment of Foot, described as "an extravagant army officer of Irish family". I've been unable to discover anything about his army career but his life was briefly described by his granddaughter, Clare Leighton, in her book Tempestuous Petticoat, as "a dramatically alternating pattern of poverty and riches. Whenever a wealthy relative died and left them some money, my mother and her parents moved to Maidenhead, a romantic, fashionable little place up the Thames, which was notorious for illicit honeymoons. There Grandpapa indulged his extravagant taste for sailing and horses until the legacy had been used up, and so many debts contracted that it was necessary to flee. And then, in the intervals between deaths, the family retired to a miniature house in St. John's Wood, where my dandified, Thackery-like grandpapa washed the dishes and avoided contact with his creditors." She names her grandpapa as James Valentine Nenon Connor, although this would appear to be in error and reveals that his father had been Governor of Jamaica and had grown up in the West Indies, a fact I've been unable to confirm.
Grandpapa was an "impecunious aristocrat" and ran up enormous debts, a fact kept hidden from the world. "Grandpapa [would take] the Blue Atlas from outside the Eyre Arms public house in St. John's Wood, when he had been going into the "West-end," yet he would leave this omnibus about two blocks before he reached his club and, hailing a hansom, arrive before the doors in grand style, where he could have been observed tipping the cabby."

Noted events in his life were:

• Military Service: a Soldier in the 87th Royal Irish Fusiliers.

• Residence: Marlow Road with his Wife and young Son, 1871, Maidenhead Berkshire England.

William Connor Magee was born on 17th October, 1821, in the Library at St. Fin Barre's·. He was educated at Kilkenny College. Entered T.C.D. in 1835; Sch. 1838; Abp. King' s Div. Prize (1St), 1841; B.A. 1842; Div.Test , 1844; D.D. 1860; D.C.L. , Oxon, 1870.

He was born in Cork, Ireland. His father was curate of the parish attached to the Anglican cathedral in Cork; his grandfather was Archbishop of Dublin. Young Magee entered Trinity College, Dublin with a scholarship at thirteen. He was ordained to the curacy of St. Thomas's, Dublin, but, being threatened with tuberculosis, went after two years to Málaga, Spain. On his return he took a curacy at Bath, England and was soon appointed to the Octagon Chapel, where his fame both as preacher and platform speaker continued to spread. Some years afterwards he was made prebendary of Wells Cathedral. In 1860, poor health caused him to accept the living of Enniskillen, Ireland. In 1864 he was made Dean of Cork and chaplain to the Lord Lieutenant. Here he showed those great gifts which ultimately raised him to high office; a powerful grasp of mental, moral and political problems, combined with eloquence of a high order, illuminated with brilliant flashes of wit.
Archbishop Magee was probably the greatest orator of his day, in the pulpit, on the platform and in the House of Lords.

General Notes: John Armstrong in his Summary of the Armstrong Family states:-
Henry George was educated at Uppingham and St Thomas’ Hospital. Became qualified medical practitioner in 1874; was house surgeon at the Royal Berkshire Hospital until 1877
When he started practice in Reading; subsequently in 1884 becoming medical officer to Wellington College, which office he held till 1919. On retirement he went to live in Weare Gifford, Devon
The following notice appeared in the Wellington College Yearbook for 1991.
“ At the end of the Summer term Dr H.G.Armstrong retired after 35 years service as medical Officer to the school. His retirement would in the ordinary way have taken effect in 1915, but in view of war he was specially asked by the governors to continue his service and he loyally responded. Many generations of Wellington boys and their parents owe a great debt to him for his skill, care and sympathy.
The position of Medical officer to a school is one of very special difficulty. Apart from the harassing anxieties inseparable from his profession, he has next to the Head Master, the most vital decisions to take and the greatest responsibilities to assume, and the severest criticism to meet, a criticism not always according to knowledge. To have faced cheer fully all these difficulties and borne all these burdens for 35 years is a life’s work of which any man can be proud.

He was at all times interested in the games and general life of the school, particularly the cadet corps and was in his younger days an active cricketer.
When the war broke out Dr Armstrong took an active mission in promoting and managing a warwork centre in Crowthorne and during the holidays of 1915 he went out as Medical Officer on board a troop ship proceeding to the Dardenelles. His visit coincided with the tragic landing at Zuvla Bay. He volunteered to assist the regular hospital staff and in this capacity carried out work of a most arduous character which might have severely tried a much younger man.”

+ 168 M    i. John Cardew ARMSTRONG [22542] was born in 1887 and died in 1951 at age 64.
